High Oil Level !!

But he is wrong, its now perfect and bang on the top of the sight glass having been run up to temperature and with 400ml taken out:thumb2

You MUST check the moil when the bike is on the centre stand and NOT the side stand. I have comforted many troubled owner with advice so if the oil level worries you just flog it quick!!

I have had the bike two weeks now and delighted with it in every way, but I had noticed the oil level window appeared over full. Having done some 500 miles I finally got round to checking the exact situation this morning by draining off some oil. It turns out that it was 400ml above the max :( I hope I havent done any damage as they say too much is nearly as bad as too little:confused: What do you think?

Can I have the spare oil?

Ignore the sarcastic comments . . .

Castrol Power 1 10/40 semi synthetic.

. . . just the way on this forum :thumb
Every time a BMW dealer puts in the amount specified in the manual, it is ALWAYS over the top of the sight glass, takes forever to drop below max. The fact that you now have the level just at the top is OK too.

It just shows how much of a 'safe' margin there is.

If you look on ADVrider.com you will see claims that when the sight glass shows empty on the centre stand, if when on the sidestand you can see oil then that is ok too. Not sure about this myself?

What do the experts think on this one - come in Steptoe, please?

I'm no expert but IIRC there is only 400 or 500ml between the sight glass being empty and completely full.

FWIW after an oil/filter change I fill using the amount spec'd in the manual, not via the sight glass and as you say it always ends up over the top of the sight glass. By the time it's due fresh oil it's normally down to the mid point of the sight glass.

Full to the top or just a wee bit visible is fine in my book :)

Now, if you want to get paranoid about oil levels try running something like my old Berg that only held 1 litre in total - mind you, with an oil change every 10 hours it never had a chance to use any oil :D

If you run the bike up in the garage for 5 minutes (not a good idea by the way) you will get a different oil level showing in the sight glass than if you've been out for a nice long run, left the bike on the sidestand for 10 minutes so the oil drains from the cooler and then check it on the centrestand whilst on a level surface. The latter is how I do it and also when changing oil. Put 4L in and that will show above the sightglass for about 4K miles and then down to just below the upper level after another 2K. That's on my bike anyway - I never have to top up the oil. You need to be consistent about how you check the level - thats the most important thing.

How hot was the engine?

Had the oil thermostat opened to allow return from the oil cooler, that holds about 400ml?

How long before you do the same check and find the level 400ml below the sight glass ??

IMHO putting in the manf recommended amount each time assumes that ALL the old oio has drained out- this is unlikely ever to be the case as some will sit in the heads and nooks and crannies that are inside the engine.
The old site glass really should exhibit a true reading otherwise its just a bit of plastic that melts if the engine gets a bit hot:cool:

The recommended amount should take into account what's left inside after an oil change.

Jeez

Just bloody glad I never invested in one of them 1200,s

What happened to get on it and just ride the fekker

too many problems too worry about Man :blast

No one had any worries at all, we just got on got on and rode it, then came that fatal day!!!!. ..........We all found this site. AHHHHHH, many are now nervous wrecks.
So, JUST DON'T EVER ask "what type of oil should I use?".

Having been riding bikes since 1976 I can assure you I do know how to check oil levels as per manufacturers instructions. And yes the excess oil was drained into a graduated jug ,so 400ml is correct. Whats with the :blast?

You've missed my point and logic - yes, you drained 400 cc.

But you don't know that it was 400cc over filled - get it. :D

Drain your oil. Fill with the exact amount as per the manufacterers spec. The oil window will be full..
Drain off 400cc and you'll see the level in the oil window -but you'll be 400cc under spec. :D
