High pitch wine

I seem to have a high pitch wine when i hold the bike at 3000rpm.
was wandering if it may be alternator belt???? Has any one else experienced this?????

You'll tend to fine that a lot of 1200 owners end up with a high pitch whine.

Usually when they're standing at the service counter at the dealership as their bike is being unloaded from the AA truck outside!

Does it do it on the mainstand (in which case can you hear from where it's coming from)

Or is it only present when you are riding?

No it goes up and down with the revs, which is why i assume alternator belt

Alternator belts squeal when acceleration not in use.

Have a look, 'tis only five screws

Any fraying will be obvious, and if you can twist the belt more than 90 deg in the middle it could be too slack and need replacing.

Doesn't sound like a belt. Bearing maybe.
Does it make a difference if the clutch is pulled.
Does it make a difference with clutch out and in neutral.
Does it matter what gear?

Yeah, but you need to tell us more. Is it doing that on the mainstand, or only when your riding, or both? And then what about the stuff Aberdeen Angus asked? Trying to isolate whether it's engine or transmission. Is the noise coming from the front of the engine etc.etc.

i noticed it mainly going up hill and thought mmm gearbox whine, but then i pulled in the clutch and reved it and it was still there. the more i reved it the higher the pitch of the whine.

could be the alternator bearings, was on mine, alternator casing had cracked and bearings running out of true,oh what joy NEW ALTERNATOR

Ok, so it's most likely engine related and not transmission. If you rev the bike in neutral on the mainstand and the noise is coming from the front at the top of the engine it could be the alternator as jontym suggests. The alternator is hard to get at but you'd be able to check the alternator belt at the same time.


If it's not coming from the front, or your not sure how to do these things yourself you'll need a trip down to your BMW shop or a trusted mechanic.
