High Screen, Low Screen or No Screen?

I took my first long ride last weekend and noticed that head buffeting and turbulent flow is a feature of my 1150Gs with extended Wunderlich screen!
I'm quite tall so my head naturally sticks up quite a lot but I'm wondering whether it's better to have the helmet in clean air with a lower screen - I noticed that Nippy Normans are promoting a slip screen for the R12GS.
Words of wisdom anyone?

I had this problem on my 1150 GS, fitted a tobinator and problem fixed.

On my 1200GS the standard screen "for me" was not good so again thought of fitting a tobinator - no change . Having read various threads on here about turbulance and spoken to other 1200GS owners in person, I have now tried a Givi, a Givi with Tobinators, a Sedacam and a Sedacam with Tobinators.

I had a big barn door touring screen on and didn't like it swopped it back for a standard screen and tryed all the settings, found the lowest one worked best for me (6 ft).

Sweet.

Bike is my daily transport and I do motorway miles, so it has to be a comfortable journey!

Aeroflow screen on mine, they can be got with differing screen sizes, as mine was secondhand, I didn't get the choice. Not sure where you can get them from though.

Help! What exactly is a "tobinator"? Sounds like I need one too.

6' 2" and head getting buffeted above about 50 mph.

I've tried the following:
Cee Bailey's, effective but like a fecking barn door.
Standard with a TT extender, better but still buffets
Tobinators and standard, Big improvement but a take a bit fannying around with.
MRA vario, sorted.

Sounds promising –*I have a large tinted "touring screen" on my 1150 and would like to replace it with a clear and smaller screen.

MRA Vario looks good. Is this the one you´ve fitted?

Is the MRA Vario similar to the "Tobinators" you keep referring to?

Tobinators are essentially just a different set of mounting brackets that you use in conjunction with your original (or aftermarket) screen.
They allow you to move the screen up, down, backwards or forwards in order to alter the flow of air behind the screen which is what reduces the buffeting.
The MRA is an aftermarket 2 piece screen which is adjustable in height and has a vent mid way up to allow air around the back.
The tobinators need a bit of trial and error testing to get right, the MRA is more a case of "just bolt it on".
It's a bit likes seats really, what works for one might not be great for someone else and unless you've tried them all it's difficult to say whats best.
I currently have tobinators on my GSA as I sold my MRA with my last bike and thought I'd give them a try.
I'll be changing bact to an MRA at some point.

I fitted Tobinators to my 1150GS with the std screen soon after I bought it used 4 yrs ago when I first experienced the buffeting They transformed the ride and I've used them ever since, but some buffeting came back over 85, so I fancied trying the MRA Vario. Bought from Jaws a few weeks back. Very impressed with the thickness and finish of the screen - a lot tidier than the Std + Tobinators. I've fitted so far without the Tobinators and playing around with angle and extension at the moment. I'm 5'8", so don't need the screen fully extended, but for comparison tried it at its highest and upright and the buffeting was really bad - realised that was because the screen was far from me. So have set mid height and angled far back and this is much better - 20-30% better than std + Tobinators in my view.

It turns out that I already have the MRA vario screen but it's branded as a Wunderlich product.

On my last long run I moved the screen to it's lowest position and that seemed to improve the buffeting (but not the noise). Bearing in mind that I'm 6ft 6in this is probably as good as it will get!

Only 5' 10", just bought MRA vario screen for my 850 GS, certain weather conditions still give buffeting, but far less and a lot quieter.
I've had to keep the top part low, when I had it higher, I think it let too much wind throug the middle.
Overall, massive improvement though

I have the vario screen, but as summers arrived I've taken the screen off, surprised how effective the silver speedo deflector thingummy is.

Go Small

I notice there aren't any replies from people with small screens. I cut down a 2nd hand screen to get rid of the noise from the standard screen (no buffeting). I loved it and used the bike on a number of long motorway runs without problem. I have now bought the NN SlipScreen which is even smaller. I plan to head to the N of Scotland soon with the first 350 miles being on the motorway and I am not dreading it. Other factors are: I'm 6' 4", 16 1/2 stone, I wear an Arai Tour-X and I don't have a neck like Mike Tyson (but I'm not a pencil-neck either). The small screen means that the turbulent wind blast from the front of the bike hits me on the chest with my head in a smooth, albeit fast, airstream. If I was the sort of guy who sat at 90 on the motorway then it might be a step too far but I don't want to ride that fast anyway.

Just my 2d's worth.

Sounds like the vario is the way to go then? I have a std screen thats scratched to buggery and have been looking at MRA Vario's for a while.

Just noticed this - interesting! How are you getting on with the slipscreen?
There does not appear to be one for the 1150GS but I was thinking of taking the top half of my vario screen off - it can't be any worse....

Small Screen - I love it

Hi Nikos, The small screen is going well thanks. I went to Aberdeen from Reading so spent quite a bit of time on the motorway at the legal limit. On the way there it was hot and dry and I didn't suffer from any aches and pains afterwards. Plus I was in the cooling breeze all the time.

On the way back the heavens opened and it was some of the heaviest rain I have ever ridden through. The rain really hit my helmet hard but I think that the only screen that would have saved me from a soaking is called a car!

I like smaller screens because I don't do 3 figure speeds and I like the absence of anything between me and the road ahead. I had an R1150R with a flyscreen and it was fine too.

You'll see that there are a fair number of small or no screen fans on this forum
