Hill start

Mine needs to go into the dealer to have the hill start looked at, has played up for the last two weeks when two up touring in the Alps ( when you actually need it ).

Randomly not engaging and when it does at least 50% of the time it is disengaging immediately and not holding the bike and when it is engaging it is then holding on when you try to pull away and being a pita.

Assume it is the microswitch BUT it coincides with the recall ecu update , any ideas

Mines a 2021. Hill start was absolutely perfect until the latest software update, now it seems to come on if you even breath on the front brake. Stalled several times as I didn't realise or indeed need it to come on. I shall be going in and turning it off over the weekend.

Mine is booked in to have the hill start looked at will see what happens

Looked at mine last week. It seems to have defaulted to Auto after the software upgrade, so the bike decides if you need it or not. Switched to manual and its back to normal again. Obvious when you know.......I shall take back my curse words.........

How come I can't find those settings for hill start? I only have ON and OFF in TFT menu. My GS is 2021 with the latest software update.

I am not aware of any user adjustable settings ?????????

I think this is it:

Adjust Hill Start Control Pro

- with riding modes Pro OE

  • Switching on ignition.
  • Call up menu Settings, Vehicle settings.
  • Select Hill Start Control Pro.
  • To turn off Hill Start Control Pro, select Off.
  • Hill Start Control Pro is deactivated.
  • To turn on manual Hill Start Control Pro, select Manual.
  • Hill Start Control Pro can be activated by firmly applying the handbrake or footbrake lever.
  • To turn on automatic Hill Start Control Pro, select Auto.
  • Hill Start Control Pro can be activated by firmly applying the handbrake or footbrake lever.
  • When applying the brake for approximately one second after the vehicle has come to a standstill and on a slope with at least a 5% gradient, Hill Start Control Pro is activated automatically.
  • The selected setting is retained even after the ignition is turned off.

Hill start saved me from dropping the bike yesterday. Definitely wouldn't have saved it without as I was going up a steep dirt track with no chance of a u turn outside the farmers house. Managed to back it down gently and turn round where he parks his vehicles.

Bike in tomorrow re hill start issues all of which have started since the last safety recall update, pita even moving the bike around in the garage with the engine running , as soon as you touch the front brake lever even in neutral it locks on the brakes and even putting it in gear it is retiscent to release the hill start .

However, if you touch the rear brake it releases immediately , fugging electronics

Well dealer just been on the phone even though hill start failed to work whilst on holiday and now applies on flat level ground even when in neutral it is apparently fine because the computer ssys it is fine

Turns out that rather than testing the bike it was given a software update first and after that no faults emerged !!!!

I discovered today (by accident) that this feature can also be operated with the rear brake. I must check the manual and see if there is any reference to it.

I only use mine with the rear brake, sharp stab and it’s on every time, quieter selection of first gear and a smooth pull away with a little revs.
The reason I use the rear is because I can’t get it to work on the front, which would be more convenient. I’ll have to check the settings to see if it can be altered.

Just wondered if you got the problem with Hill Start Control sorted and if so how - have similar symptoms on my 2018 1250gs - just changed rear pads and piston seals (as one was stuck) - this has improved the rear braking - but not solved the hill start issue as I had hoped.

My RT has it and it's been a complete PITA. Despite turning it off, it reactivates irrespective of turning it off as per the manual. I had a software update done last year but it made no difference. When manoeuvring the bike to either get it into my garage, or when getting it out, it activates whenever I apply the brake meaning putting it in gear and pulling forward to deactivate. First world issue really but means when applying brakes on the slope I can't manhandle the bike back and forth without it activating. On the move, I never use it and have never needed such gadgets in over 40 years of biking. The bike's due in for service in a few months so I'll be asking BMW to check it again.

My 1250 and now my 1300 both behave the3 same. Very hard pull on the brakes to activate it on an uphill, activates almost every time with very light pressure on downhill. Deactivating it is the best setting

Don't think you can deactivate it in TFT settings on mine - 2018.
I've bled the system again and also the ABS pump with aid of Motoscan - still comes on for a moment and then releases - nota massive issue but can be handy touring two-up - not quite sure where to go next. Any ideas?

Fault codes 480860 and 480862 popped up for the ABS when I checked today

Hill start came with my bike, I thought that's clever. After a couple of weeks I knocked it off. It is a nuisance, if you can't ride without it and do a hill start without it, you need training . Or a car. Same if you can't stop right foot down and hillstart using front brake. You need a car.
