Historic vehicle exemption Q

So I've received the V5 for my recently bought 79 RT and it's down as historic on the doc... Does that mean it's automatically exempted from MOTs or do you have to re register it for that. I know I have to apply for road tax exemption...👍

MOT exemption is not automatic on Historic status achievement. If your vehicle has been 'substantially modified' then it may still be subject to MOT testing. So the V112 (titled 'Declaration of Exemption from MOT') is needed if you go to the Post Office. If you tax on line you needn't do a V112.

Also you still have to SORN the vehicle if you keep it of road and dont insure it.

..... and you still have to 'tax' it, albeit free, if you're going to be riding it. (with insurance of course)

The main thing chaps is if it's already been exempted do if have to re-exempt for mot or does it carry on automatically...?

I think I answered the OP's question correctly. He doesn't need to do anything about MOT exemption because the vehicle is already registered as historic.

I also think my answer (in the same post) to Blue's point was correct. The V112 isn't used to gain exemption from MOT testing, it's used to declare an exemption for RFL purposes.

You don’t need to do anything about the MOT if it is already registered historic. The exemption continues without you doing anything. The bike will need to be ‘taxed’ each year, but at zero cost. If you don’t insure it, it will need to be SORNed.

The only issue here is if you go to the post office to renew your tax you will need the V112.

If you renew on line you don't need the V112.

Your bike became exempt in April 2020. If you go on line to tax it , the value will come up as zero as Micky advises. I took a V112 to the post office when my Kwacker was 41 yrs old. They ignored my form , tapped a few keys on the computer, advised me the bike was historic and retained the original V5. About a week later the historic labelled V5 came through.
 
I've not yet recommissioned the R65 but thought I'd do the historic V5 thing in advance so it'd be one less delay when I finally get round to it.

The only problems that I had with this was that the tiny local post office had no idea what to do, and the larger one in town also got very confused that I simply wanted to present the V5 and V112 to them for dispatch to the DVLA - as per the DVLA instructions.

The only way they could work out how to do it, as I later discovered, was to try and tax it on the system and that instructed them to accept the V5 to send to Swansea.

A couple of weeks later the new historic V5 arrived and I thought all was well, until I get a letter from the MIB advising me that I had the vehicle taxed but not insured and could be liable for prosecution.

I SORNed the bike straight away to stop that happening (or reduce the risk as strictly speaking it has been illegal for about 4 months), but I think the main problem is that the Post Office staff come across the Historic stuff so infrequently that it can all get in a bit of a muddle.

Same happened with me except my post office new exactly what to do took my V5, which was returned to me as a new one in 2 weeks from Swansea, then received a letter as I had not registered it on the road saying Tax it or sorn it so I sorn it. It is know registered with the DVLA on the road and costing me the princely sum of ÂŁ1.73 in insurance weekly to use.
 
The trick to this is to comlete a form V10 to accompany the V5C and the V112.

You are actually applying to tax your vehicle but at a zero rate.

Without this you are just trying to change the tax class.

You need to apply to change the tax class and apply for road tax (zero rate) at the same time.

Do this at any post office where you can still apply and pay for road tax over the counter.

They will take the V5C and the V10 and send them to DVLA for you - internally. They just screw up and dispose of the V112 for some reason.

About 10 days later you should receive a new V5C with ‘historic’ as the tax class.

The vehicle has to be insured for road use for this to work.

This method has never failed for me and I have gone through the process multiple times over the years.

You need do nothing. Even though tax is free when it’s next due to be taxed you’ll still receive a tax renewal letter, exactly the same as if you had to pay for tax.
If you’ve just bought the vehicle you’ll need to do exactly the same as you would a newer vehicle. Tax it (no cost) online using the details on your new log book .. for the most it’ll ask if the vehicle has been significantly altered from original. Just tick the “No” box. Job done.
I have 6 historic vehicles. I’ve never had to fill in a form at the post office or had any palaver.
All done very simply online.
