Hit Air Jacket

Hit air

Hi Nomad
I've tried one out at my local shop they seem a good bit of kit that fits over your jacket and you connect the lanyard to the bike ,it takes a hefty pull to set it off but it inflates instantly supporting your neck, sides and coxis. and very easy to reset if used,as the air bags just pop fasten back.If you check out this web site he done a you tube vid sorry no good with links but you will find it on this site www.sportouring.com. Hope this helps you.:aidan

yes I have that exact one but under the "helite" brand - http://www.point-two.co.uk/bike/index.html

I wear it every time I'm on the bike (which is not that often) and have only set it off once - when I dropped the bike. I can only describe the sensation as being in a perfect body mold of polystyrene. I felt very secure and it confirmed my decision to buy the jacket. I think i paid around £500 this time last year.

I'd recommend it absolutely but if I had my time back again I would get the "vest" rather than the jacket. The jacket itself is not as good as my streetuard2 so I'd prefer the day-glow vest over my streetguard. But how good the vest is compared to the jacket for protection/inflation I don't know. I was actually considering selling my jacket to buy a vest so might do that at some stage.

I do still wear a proper back protector that straps to my body rather than the foam that came in the back of the jacket.

Sizing -get a size smaller than you take. I take a medium so bought a medium jacket and it's very big on me. I tried the small on at the 2008 NEC bike show and it fit me perfect so don't ask me why I ordered the medium.

Any questions, fire away.

Thanks lads

Thanks anthony,mike,wapping and essjay.
essjay why do you say the jacket isnt as good as a streetguard?
the idea of this was to lose the leathers, waterproofs, and thermal lining etc.
if i went for the streetguard, thermal, and the hit air, i would fell like michelin man.:(
i was rather hoping it was a real good jacket with bouncy castle features.
it does come with the zip out thermal though.
not sure how waterproof it is.??
ive bin ridin since i was 8 and at that time, the technology like this wasnt around,i have had 8 weeks in plaster and 2 days with concussion, so it seems like a good idea.
at the moment i was looking at the excel show at an £1100 rukka reduced to £850, but i just cant justify that for pleasure riding.
the hg cruise 5 is good too, but ive also been looking at the held hakuna jacket and strides and upgrading the armour here:

bugger

I've been using the Hit Air Jacket for the last month. I got the hi viz vest and I wear it over an Aerostich suit. I haven't had to deploy it yet luckily. It just needs a bit of extra thought to connect and disconnect the lanyard. I bought it for 300 sterling on line. I wear it everyday and feel a bit safer with it on.

It is good to hear Essjay's experience of when it did deploy.

I reckon on giving myself every chance I can if I do come off.

I really really like my streetguard2 jacket. Fits me great and is waterproof. My "EU" jacket is not waterproof. It gets very heavy in the rain and wet patches have come through. I've not been soaked inside it or anything, just had water get through. I do wear a high-viz vest over it so my preferred setup would be my streetguard2 jacket with the high-viz airbag vest over it (this kind of thing but in high-vis yellow - http://www.point-two.co.uk/bike/hi-vis.html).

My advice - buy a streetguard2 jacket off ebay UK or Germany (I got a barely used one for peanuts) and then get the high-viz airbag vest - works out cheaper than the reduced Rukka. The Streetguard2 is the best jacket I've ever worn without question and they are going cheap as the streetguard3 is out. I went to my local BMW dealer and tried on the jacket to get the correct sizing.

Yes the thermal liner does zip out. I have mine just left out and wear a fleece instead.

To be honest it was quite an expensive jacket, but worth every penny if it brings me home safe to my wife and kid.

vest

i wonder what the streetguard will be like if the vest is over the top, will the streetguard still be watertight? will the vest cause the jacket to leak by rubbing?

I've been looking for an airbag jacket for a while. Saw the hit-air but I reckon that the Spidi DPS 03 jacket or at least the Spidi vest looks like a better version. Any thoughts? Anyone tried the Spidi gear? www.spidi.com

It should be fine. I wore a normal high-viz jacket over mine for years and it never leaked

I do wonder if theses inflating jackets are a solution to a problem?

That is, a solution to a problem that does not exist.

I can see the idea behind preventing a hyper extension of the neck, cushioning the kidneys and all that, but I also rely a little not much I'll grant you on skill and luck. Those old fashioned things... no heard of or used much anymore...

Plus I've dropped the bike so many times I'd have to fill the panniers and have a 2 support trucks with more soda stream cartridges in'em following me about....:blast

2K for klim suit
500 nikka for a neck brace
500 for another airbag thingy....

I might just buy a really big aerostitch and fill it with bubble wrap....might be an option. But it's a free country and I'd probably have one if I could get away with...

Put it this way - it's not going to prevent every injury but in my view if it cushions my body slightly in a tumble or prevents my neck twisting then it's worth it.

I've read about people who took a tumble with it on and they felt it was worth it so to me that's got to stand for something. Can't put a price on your body!

I could be wrong but I think I read in Bike a couple of months ago that the French Police had been conducting tests on the Hit Air system and were now going to be issuing to all motorcycle officers....a good enough endorsement for me!

I know some of our officers are also lobbying for the system but as ever we will do the usual and wait until we have incontrovertable proof (i.e. another officer either dead or seriosly injured) before issuing....but I am convinced this or something like it will become standard kit.

Nothing of course replaces skill and good defensive riding but anything to reduce the injury/mortality rate has to be a good thing.

I've read about people who took a tumble with it on and they felt it was worth it so to me that's got to stand for something.

The problem is that the same people cannot possibly know what injury (if any) they might have suffered had they not been wearing an air vest.

Of course they might think it saved them damage, simply as they lived to tell the tale without injury, which is fine and as good an endorsement as any. :thumb2

In one of the reviews I read, the paramedics on scene commented that the injuries were less then what was expected in this particular type of accident.

Sure the jacket might do feck all but if there's a chance of doing some good then it's worth it in my book. Simple as.

BALTIMORE -- While motorists who have been in car crashes often attribute the help of air bags to saving their lives, a Maryland motorcycle rider injured in a collision is doing the same -- for a jacket.

Joseph McPhatter, of Randallstown, was injured in a crash on Interstate 83 after being cut off by another motorist in September. According to police, McPhatter was ejected 100 feet, hitting the ground at an impact rate of 140 mph.

Police said that McPhatter might have been severely injured had it not been for the Impact Jacket he was wearing -- a jacket that inflates like an air bag when a motorcyclist is in an wreck.

McPhatter suffered from sore ribs and knees and a few other minor injuries, but it could have been much worse, officials said.

Officials said McPhatter's crash was the first real-life incident in the U.S. where the jacket was used.
