Spent this morning fitting a new set of Discs/ pads all round on my 2002 R1150GSA. Found this nice hole in one of the front caliper piston faces this morning.

Anyone seen it happen before and can i just replace the piston?

Never had the pistons out of a caliper before, is it a fairly straight forward job?

Got the chunk of metal that had been in the hole, fairly corroded, but like you say probably damaged at some point in it's past and eventually caught up with it. Has all gone back together now and tested, so shall sort out some spares from Motorworks and learn how to do a rebuild and then give it a go.

the pistons are hollowed out not a solid lump the flat side faces towards the caliper body and the fluid acts on it and the seals.
What you can see are the remains of anti squeal inserts
