Plans are coming together

Well folks, the plans are rapidly coming together....

Due to strong demand we're going to run this on the Saturday only, but there will still be plenty of good lanes to ride on Sunday for those that will be staying over - I'm happy to lead a ride for those that want to go out).

Desert Rat and I have been out scoping the trails and recording waypoints. We're up to about 37 right now but there will be closer to 50 for you to go after when we're finished.

Logistics:

Right now we're looking for an 8.00am briefing on Saturday followed by route planning & map marking with teams departing at will from 9.00am. Each team will be given a booklet of waypoints to navigate to with something to find or identify when you get there. This will be recorded in your booklets. Rendezvous will back at the start at or before 8.00pm to avoid penalties. Then we'll retire to a local pub to count up the points and sink a beer or two, trade stories and the funny photos. I’ll be around on Friday evening if anyone wants to meet up for beers and/or dinner.

Points for the fewer tougher waypoints, to find or to get to, will be higher but there will be lots of easier to get to points for lower values so it will be up to each team to decide how you play for the points. We've tried to put some of the higher value waypoints in locations that you may be able to park up and walk to or approach from another direction if the going is a little tough. Also the vast majority of lanes will be accessible to big and small bikes with only one or two not suitable for big GS's (or similar) due to ruts or incline. Difficult lanes will have a note to that effect in the booklet.

You'll be covering 100, 150 or more miles on the day with as much off-road as possible. Lanes vary from smooth and flat to rocky and slippery. There will be sand, water (depending on rainfall), chalk, mud, ruts, rocks, you name it to test your riding skills.

There are a number of fuel stations and plenty of eateries and pubs on the way round so you and your bike should not go hungry.

What’s the damage?
To reduce costs as much as possible (and because some of you may already have them) we're going to ask you to bring your own maps; we will let you known in plenty of time to buy these before you come but for costing purposes each team will need one set (2) of OS Explorer maps (about £7.99 each). I don’t want to tell you which maps just yet as I don’t want local folks to have an advantage!!! You will also need a compass, pen, highlighter pen (for marking up your maps), mobile phone and digital camera per team. Also suggest you have a waterproof map pouch for the Maps and Booklets in case of rain.

Costs will be £25 per team of 2 (minimum); £5 for each additional rider/bike per team. Pillions are free, but teams must be two or more bikes. Those signed up as singles will be paired up in a team of two.

I will email all those who have expressed interest in the next week or so to request payment and provide further details.

Hope this is OK with everyone; any questions please let me know.

cheers

Jarv (Simon)

Numbers are growing...

Just and FYI for those that have signed up or are considering signing up.... we now have 24 people and 23 bikes signed up.... not bad!!!!:thumb2

If you want to sign up the deadline is July 17th.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the weekend of the 15th.

Cheers

Costs...

Sounds good.

What does the entry cost cover?

Just general costs of setting this up (printing materials (the booklets), fuel/oil, tags at waypoints where we need them, a token prize for places 1-3 and so on.

Not looking to make money form this, just cover costs; anything left over will go to charity and/or help fund beer for all on Saturday night :D

Hello jarv,

Interested in joining in, might be a few friends interested so maybe a couple more teams.

I've PM'd you my e mail details

Thanks

Money where your mouth is... ;-)

This info will be sent on email to those that have supplied them, however as not all have given me an email I’m posting it here as well…..Please let me have your email if you do not receive a copy of this announcement via email.

OK folks, August is rushing up on us really fast; time to choose up teams and get your wallet out…. I’m going to close sign-up for the event on July 18th (just under one month from the event).

What do you need to do at this point?
- confirm if you are entering as part of a team or as a single (to be allocated to team of two/three)
- If you are entering a team please nominate a lead member and provide all names
- If you are entering as a single please let me know what type of bike/tyres you’ll be riding and your riding skill level (e.g. Novice, capable but prefer slower pace or fast)
- Get your check book out and send your entry fees in by Saturday July 18th

Once I have received your entry fee and the info above I will allocate teams and let you know which maps you need to buy (you will need 2*OS Explorer maps). If you are riding as a team of two singles you may want to buy additional sets of maps so you both take home a record of all these lanes.

Cost is £25 for a team of two with £5 for each additional bike/per team.
If you are a single the cost will be £12.50 per bike as we’re aiming to put you into a team of two. If we need to put you into a team of three or if you subsequently find a team to join (before July 18th) come and see me on the day and I’ll refund as appropriate.

So for example:
If you are a team of 4 the cost will be £35 (Team *1, extra riders *2)

In the email version of this announcement I will provide the address to send cheques to (Cash MUST be sent recorded).

Right now we have between 28 & 30 people signed up for 10 or 11 teams!!!

Bike preparation:

I don’t want to teach my grandmother to suck eggs but if I say this then no one can say they weren’t prepared…:blast
Please, please, please ensure your bike is up to being ridden off road and is maintained to a high standard. There is no rescue or back up for you (hence min 2 people per team); we will of course do whatever we can to help (please ensure you have mobile phones).

I would highly recommend off-road tyres; a lot of the trails will be ride-able on Trailwings/Tourences, etc but if you want to tackle some of the more challenging lanes and/or it has been raining you will be better off and it will be more fun and safer with the right tyre.
Please bring appropriate spares, tubes, tyre levers, clutch brake levers, etc, etc as you see fit.

Also you must be road legal (insurance, tax, MoT, license, etc) and riding with appropriate gear i.e. Motorcycle boots, Tousers, jacket, gloves, etc.

Map reading

The road-book for this event has been prepared with OS maps and standard notation based on the grid references. If you are unclear please let me know BUT we will go through it at the briefing on Saturday morning.
The best reference I have found is here: http://www.sewhgpgc.co.uk/os.php

So for this event you’ll be given the OS Map Number and then a set of co-ordinates such as:

Map No. xxx; 837E/304N

This example refers to grid Square 83 East, 30 North. This particular point is 7 tenths across the square to the East of the 83 East line (837) and 4 tenths North of the 30 North line (304). Hope this makes sense.

Any questions please PM or email me….

Looking forward to seeing you all in August.

Markh & The Speeding Stag,

I cannot send/you cannot receive PM's... Please let me have your email addresses.

Waypoints are done!!!!

Progress update....

OK, so, the Waypoints are all out there marked, logged and ready to go. Many thanks to Simon T (Desert Rat) for his assistance. We have 56 waypoints/lanes for you to track down and find on the day so I hope your map reading skills are up to scratch :D. Points for Waypoints found range from 12 for the easiest/closest to 200 for the hardest/most distant. A total of around 5100 points will be available for you to chase.

For those that have confirmed participation I have sent details of the two maps that each team will need.

regards

Simon

RVP Location & Timing

for all those coming along on the 15th here's the latest.

Meeting place - I had intended to met in a free carpark that has plenty of space for cars & trailes and several bikes thinking that as it was August we'd have good weather - doh!!! :blast I'm now looking for a venue that will offer shelter if the weather turns bad - stay tuned for an update shortly. The general location will be close to Aldershot in Hants.

Event timing- As we have 56 waypoints for you to visit, with some cracking lanes amongst them, and because we've reduced the event from two to one day I wanted to get an early start so you have time to cover the ground. To give you an idea, with full knowledge of all the lanes at a fast pace without stopping (except for fuel) there's about 4.5 hours of riding!!!! So considering navigation, search and stop time at/for each waypoint, lunch and fuel stops I doubt it if anyone will complete all 56 in the 10 hours of riding time available - now there's a challenge for you:D

The intention is to meet at 8:00am prompt for a quick briefing then give you 45mins to mark up the maps hitting the road at 9:00am. Then have people return at or before 7:00pm (there will be penalties for being late :()for beers :beerjug::beer:and toting up the scores.

Any questions let me know.

Jarv
