Home Network via Router?

Hi

I've done a search on this forum but not found any thread that covers my question (there may be one, I just haven't found it!)

I'm using a Netgear DG834G v3 router, connected to broadband, with a PC connected via an ethernet cable and a laptop connected wirelessly. This is working fine as a means of connecting with the internet but I'd like to be able to print from the laptop on the printer connected to the PC. I've tried to set up a local network between the PC and laptop but am failing; I suspect that the problem is that (1) there is no cable between the PC and the laptop and (2) there is no wireless card on the PC.

In my naivety I thought that I might be able to set the whole thing up via the router but have not been able to find a way of doing it. Apart from buying a card for the PC, does anyone have any suggestions of how to solve the problem? The Netgear site has not proved helpful so far.

run the "network setup wizard" on both pc's.

You need file and print sharing installed on both (iirc) computers and they need to be on the same workgroup / domain.
If that is the case, open windows explorer and in the address bar type \\computername\C$ where computername is the name of the computer in windows, or if that does not work try \\IPADDRESS\c$ where IPADDRESS is the IP address of the other computer. If that does not work then there's something wrong with the router at a guess.

The DG834G v3 router will not stop network traffic out of the box,

First step, (on both pc's)

Right click My computer,

Click properties,

Click Computer name,

Click change and put them both in a workgroup called "bollox"

It will say wecome to "bollox"

Reboot both.

Have cup of tea and a fag, while the computers have a sly chat with each other.

Open exprorer open my MY Network Places, explore find your workgroup it should be the only one eak!

and you should see the other PC.

Yes / NO??

Right click a folder in explorer you want to share, click sharing and share

You can do the same with printers etc. if you want to share those.

I just found this on printer sharing on the net, thought it may be useful...........

"After I installed my new printer on the computer, I wanted to use it from other computers. I even wanted to print from my laptop computer, sitting on the patio, connecting to the network with a wireless NIC. Before I could do that, I had to share the printer. Windows XP doesn't automatically share printers, which is a good thing when you don't want to share your toys.

To share the printer, I opened the Printers and Faxes folder on the computer that was connected to my printer.

To open the Printers and Faxes folder

Click Start and then click Control Panel.
•

Click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
•

In the Printers and Faxes folder, I clicked the printer's icon and, in the tasks pane, I clicked Share This Printer.

I opened the printer's Properties dialog box, and clicked on the Sharing tab.
•

I clicked Share Name, and then clicked OK.

That's it—the printer was immediately available for other computers to use.

Now that I had a network printer, I was ready to connect to it and print from other computers on the network.

To connect to the printer

I opened Control Panel, and clicked Printers and Other Hardware.
•

I clicked Add a Printer.
•

Instead of adding a local printer, though, I clicked Printer Connection and then browsed the network for the printer.

The whole process took less than a minute before I was printing to the network printer as though it was connected to the computer."
