Home servicing and dashboard reminder

I think that when the time comes for the next service in a few thousand miles, I'll try and offer a few quid to the dealer or anyone around my neck of the woods (or at the end of a twisty road) to reset the pesky little light.

Try offering the dealer your custom?

Alien concept?

...I think... the resetting of the service light requires the VIN to be logged into the GS911 and you only get 10 VIN numbers before you have to upgrade.

The other joy with the service light is that it comes on if you disconnect the battery, luckily I have the GS911.

Hi Alex,

That holds true for the 'Enthusiast' version of any GS-911 only. 'Professional' versions allow actuation tests, resetting of service lights etc. on an unlimited number of bikes.

It's as clear as mud for most new buyers, because there are two different versions of the GS-911. The older type (yellow casing) is compatible with all injected and CANBUS BMWs made from 1993 to 2012. The newer type (plum-coloured casing) is compatible with all injected, CANBUS and LINBUS+CANBUS BMWs made from 1993 to the present day.
Both types are available in 'Enthusiast' and 'Professional' versions!
Also, most BMWs using older Bosch Motronic injection systems (MA-series) require an additional three-pin adaptor for the diagnostic connector.

Also, I noticed on a number of my older BMWs that you leave the battery disconnected for a long time (more than a day or so), the mileage countdown to service is still logged by the ECU, but the 'Service' indicator on the dash does not appear.
Weird.

The alien concept appears to be reading the first post of the thread.

My dealer said he wouldn't be happy to reset my service light due to insurance/legal responsibility blah blah blah.

Can't PM you as you are not a subscriber. Text me your number or email to 077842 095340, I can probably help.

I read it - give them your custom, they carry out the service and reset the counter?? You want them to stay in business by throwing them the odd scrap. Maybe your employer can survive on similar? Blah blah blah

No, you're still not getting it. I'm servicing the bike, not them. I'm not paying £100 for something I can do myself in an afternoon (and what's more, enjoy doing it). And that's not to mention the appalling reputation surrounding Cannon's and my own 100% (!) negative experience with bike mechanics in general.

I'm not throwing my money at them, that's the entire idea of the thread. The work will be done by me, and they are unwilling to extinguish the light. I'm fine with that, my issue is finding out how to get rid of it given those are the circumstances.

My employer is hardly relevant, and happens to the be the NHS, although I'd hardly describe £110billion as "the odd scrap".

Thanks, I was a subscriber, but now am a student on very little so have cut out most subscriptions to things.

You described their reasons for not wanting to reset the light as being "Bullshit"........

Al

I intend doing all my own servicing on my 2014 GS1200LC and have for many years on other bikes. Buy a GS911 and you can then reset the service reminder and check out many other things. I don't just service my own bikes but BMW car to and change tyres. Whilst I accept dealers have huge overheads which have to be paid for, I like playing with my toys and save a fortune by doing so.

Because they made it up. At least say, "yeah we'll reset it, but only if you pay", or "only if you have the service here". Insurance, standards of safety and legal implications are bullshit.

But like I said, that's not the issue...
