Has anybody who services their own Bike taken it to the Dealers for a firmware update? Cost, whats the going rate? Mines going in for the Fork recall and was going to ask them to check for updates

Last time i went to a dealer for a diagnostic read, it was 15 mins labour to read a fault code!

budget a minimum of 1hr labour +vat
 
Be careful, when the firmware update is done sometimes it can take up to 3 hours plus to be done if it does not take first time.

Whilst it is ongoing the bike will be taking up a ramp and a computer link so you will end up with the bill.

Normally if the bike is being dealer serviced the updates and the time they take are FOC and included within the service cost

No..its a 15 Bike, might be as well to pay for a service, as the Valve clearances are ready for a check and get Diagnostic and Firmware as part of the Service

.................... yep but if it done at the time of the service you don't pay for the update time (however long or how many attempts it takes ) only the time the actual service takes
 
The only time it will take three hours is if the bike is fitted with the TFT and it's not updated properly so they have to start from scratch.

Even bikes that haven't been updated in a few years only take around 10 mins.

Even better to know, no TFT for me, just plugged the GS-911 in the bike, it is like reading Chinese, god knows what firmware I have in the bike.

K001-17-03-501 is 2017 firmware on your bike so not very old. I've updated bikes with 2013 firmware and they still only take 15 mins or so, if that.

do you have to be a dealer to do the update?
 
When I had my forks done in beginning of june (-15 GSA), the dealer upgraded all systems without me asking for it. When I got the bike back it went like this: "Ok, now your bike is done. And, by the way, we upgraded all the systems for you as well. Order from BMW". Checking when I got home the software was now dated 05-18.

I suspect it has to do with installing the Euro-4 software to the engine for less emission, and for the newer BMS-X to work with Euro-4 the other systems need an update as well. I came to my understanding that BMW urged them to do it on all noen-Euro-4 bikes.

Surly this must be valid for all of Europe?

Sorry but that is misleading it is a fairly regular thing where software uddates as part of the service package relating to everything from engine ecu, esa suspension to GSAP fail to take on the first attempt.
Regularly see in my dealer that bikes are on the ramps for a couple of hours and service staff will tell you that they regularly pick up problems on post service test rides following firmware updates and the bike has to have the updates reinstalled , or the owner will pick up on issues on their ride home and have to return.
On my 2018 bike it took 3 attempts to sort out the computer pro with software updates from the factory and on my old gsa on both the first and second annual services it failed to accept the firmware updates on the first attempt
