Completely different bikes

I have ridden a CRF300 twice in recent weeks, one was brand new from a dealer and one was a mate’s with Rallye RAID suspension (much improved it) but stock engine and exhaust

Both were very lame in the thrill department-albeit they were a ‘nice’ motorcycle in a beige sort of way

No substitute for something like a XR400 of old and nowhere near a WR450F or CRF 450

Stick with the 300 for TET
Having ridden a CRF450X in the desert for many years, raced a YZ250, pootled around on a Super Tenere down to Cape Town I would say a 300 Rally is an absolutely brilliant bike.
I’ve ridden mine through France twice down to the bottom of the country on the TET and it is absolutely brilliant
100mpg, 150kg, and 100% reliability is awesome. Mines got decent suspension and that’s all it needs
I don’t get the thought they they are boring. If you think they’re boring, just ride a section that you should do at 40mph at 60mph and let the fun begin
Mine I will keep in my stable of bikes to the end of my riding days as they are so cheap to run and maintain. Big advocate for the 300 Rally
