Hi All!!

Just signed up because after spending 2 days in the Welsh hills doing Level 1 of the World of BMW Off road riding school I am well and truely hooked on the GS (are you here Lozza???)!!

I think thier subtle marketing ploy has worked...my beloved Kawasaki ZX6R is up for sale to make way for some GS goodness!

Over the 2 days I rode a F 650 GS and a R 1200 GS....and now torn between a 650 or an 1150 (not getting a 1200 yet!!)

Now I will use it on the road and take a pillion so is the 650 gonna be up to it??

Advice guys....on any things to look out for when looking at 2nd hand GS's???

I am sure the techies on here will give you the pros & cons of the GS, but welcome to the forum.

I get my 1150GS tonight can't wait :D :D :D

Hi Nick,
I'm doing things the other way round, I bought the GS first and will do the off road skills course soon. Is there any advice you can give regarding preparation for the course, and how worthwhile (and how much fun) is it ??

Nick. I had a Dakar for just over a year, before I bought a 1150 Adventure. I loved the Dakar, and if I was doing a some serious off roading the truth is I probably would not have sold it. Virtually all of my riding though seems to be on roads or touring, so decided to go for a 1150, and haven't regretted it once. The 650 will carry a pillion, but frankly I don't think it will have enough power, so for what its worth my advice would be to go for a 1150.

I'm sure Nick can make his own recommendation, but my 5 top tips would be.
Dont wear too much. Lifting the bikes constantly is hard work. Take the liners out and just wear a Polo shirt under your jacket.
Don't forget your Driving Licence. They will not let you on the course without it.
Dont forget that you can rent clothing and equipment from the school
Try and do the course with at least 1 mate.
Cut your toe nails. Learnt this the hard way. As you are constantly on slopes, unless your toe nails are cut, you risk losing them. Mine went numb after the second day, and both just fell off within weeks. No pain whatsoever, but it did make the kids wince. ;)

Which GS?

Don't listen to them. The 1100 is the bike to have, no contest, and you'll need all the money you've saved to buy the goodies for it.
