Horrible gear shifting problem

Riding into work today and the bike became hard to shift down . Then up. Then shifting lever started to stick as if is was starting to sceeze up. Then engine started to idle very badly . Wanted to stall. Then the revs would not drop back down to idle speed and stayed up around 3k. Looking like a breakdown service home tonight. I have no idea where to start looking for the problem. Any ideas?

Start with the gear linkage the can get cruded up

Think the idle issue was a pulled throttle cable. I think.. Gears have freed up after it cooled. Will have to strip the linkage in the morning. What's the chances of both happening at the same time.

Many years ago had similar prob on my bike. Wanted it diagnosed / sorted proper so took it to Scrimmingers in Lincs who said bush had picked-up in gear lever mech. To strip, ream bush and rebuild gear change mech was ~30min and the charge about £15. never had prob since.

Strip, clean and lube of the gear lever linkage normally sorts this out.
