Me n Our Lass will be setting off on a road trip in the car Friday 19th, taking the car (MX5) via the tunnel for an Alps tour. The first night is booked at Laon, about 2.5 hours from Calais. From there we are going to trog it on the Paeage to Baden Baden where the second night is booked.IMG_2307.jpeg

From there we will be taking the B500 to Freiburg , and then down through Switzerland to Thonon Les Bains where we will pick up the Route des Grandes Alpes.IMG_2308.jpeg

Thinking we may stay somewhere near Morillon before really getting into it.IMG_2309.jpeg

All the way down to Menton, before heading west on the south coastIMG_2312.jpeg

And then heading north west to the Gorge Du Verdon for a couple of days.IMG_2313.jpeg

And so to the question, given that only the first two nights are booked into hotels (the last one is also, in St Omer), looking at the highlighted route, can I ask if anyone has experience of good hotels along the way ? I was thinking we would booking.com it along the way, but if anyone knows of any particularly nice places along the way I’d be pleased to take advice (y)

Try via Michelin app. That has good recommendations for routes, restaurants and hotels.

For hotels, I do the first search on Google maps. It will show booking .com and others such as Expedia. You often get the direct to hotel option as well which can be cheaper. Some hotels are not on the big booking sites so you might get extra options.

I’ve stayed in Hotel de la Poste in Valloire a few times.
Lovely place though restaurant had gone slightly downhill last time .

Stayed here in Sospel . Fabulous food.

For Gorge du Verdon I’d stay in Castellane at the Nouvel Hotel du Commerce. We were there just two weeks ago . Fabulous place .

Have dinner on the terrace at La Forge, out front door of hotel above and turn right

Probably one night stops JB, until we get to Gorge Du Verdon where we’d like a two day stop. One day to drive the area and another to spend on the lake, hopefully hiring a boat for the day.
Car is different I guess, but we really appreciated our 3x 2 night stops - however we were going as far as you

To be fair JB we may not get all of our proposed route done. The two days at Gorge du Verdon is important as it’s somewhere my wife particularly likes, so we may find ourselves leaving the Route des Grandes Alpes at some point and heading west to make some distance up.

Hotel L'Autantic in Borg is nice, up the road a bit Hotel Belvedere is Seez has a great location on a Hairpin bend overlooking Bourg down below, both are great.

A bit out of the way over the border in Italy this is great value;

Stayed in Valberg once, just rocked up and grabbed a room on arrival here;

Looks like geared up for busy Ski Season and was a bit of a bargain when half empty in the summer, good size underground car park for those of nervous disposition.

That’s a huge area you are asking for hotels over.

Wessie’s suggestion is probably easiest to start with, not least as you’ll be able to look at hotel options that are (near enough) where you expect to find yourself come the mid-to-late afternoon or evening. It’s hard when bods recommend the ‘Must do hotel XYZ in town ABC’ for a night, when you pass by its front door at 11:00 on your way to a destination well beyond.

Whilst in France, try using the Logis de France app for hotels. I find it’s very good at finding good hotels that aren’t expensive.
As for locations, in Thonon I use this one or Le Marronniers next door.

Not a hotel..but would recommend Castellane as a stop. Plenty there, enroute for your roads etc.
If doing the Gorge, then north side, come back via Aigiunes for a completely different perspective on the quiet side of the Gorge du Verson. Watch for the spectacular tiled roof on Château d'Aiguines. Clearly visible even from the road through the village. Great views looking back over Lac le Croix on the road up..
