How do I Reset 2006 R1200GSA computer

Hello guys. I have my 06 R1200GS ADV. since may 2008. When I first got it , the fuel mileage was averaging 46 mpg. The average mpg has dropped to 36 mpg for the past few months. I remember reading somewhere,and since then I have searched for hours, How do I reset the main computer to reset the fuel control circuit. I thought it was a way for the bike to re-learn you driving habits and maybe get the mpg back to where it once was. One thing that may have upset the bike was , I left the key on for 24 hrs. and found the battery dead. It was about 2 yrs. old, so I replaced it with a new one. I believe that is when my MPG dropped. Cycle the display until the mpg is displayed; then keep the button pressed until the dispay for the mpg resets. The average will be computed again from this point onwards

If you think there is something wrong with the computer(s) your dealer should be able to zap some sense into it with a firmware update.

On the R1200GS
1) Disconnect your battery again
2) Wait a minute
3) Reconnect battery
4) Switch on ignition but NOT the engine
5) Cycle the throttle fully a couple of times
6 )Switch off ignition

Doing this resets your throttle position in the memory.
You need to do this each time you disconnect the battery for whatever reason BTW.

OK Vern ........... sorry about that. I thought it was the mpg reading that you were try to reset to zero.

no problem, It was a screwed up wording in the post. I did the battery unhook and rehook. throttle twist and stuff. Magic happened after that. The bike feels better and after 275 miles today, the bike is averaging 46 mpg again. I check it with a full tank and refilled it after the ride. Worked great. Thanks for the help. Vern

Very useful thread! My fuel economy went from 50mpg (imp) to 43mpg after I got my bike back after the brake line recall/replacement of fractured brake line.

I was about to take it back to the dealer to get it sorted; this saves me the trip. Many thanks!

BMW 730

forgive the intrusion. I have a 1991 BMW 730 i. On these, it is a good idea to reset the computer from time to time. Disconnect battery, then short out the leads (NOT THE BATTERY!, obviously), you can put a fuse in the link to be extra safe. Leave for about 15 minutes. Remove link and reconnect battery. This sort of allows everything to zero out to factory settings. On the car, computer manages gear changes etc. and it all seems to go much more smoothly. Make a not of trip mileages etc. as this will all disappear.
I have absolutely no idea if this is applicable to bike systems, but I cannot think it would make anything go bang
