How do i secure network with a password

I've just had my broadband connection "fibre opticed" .

I now need to add a password to the connection to stop people sitting outside my house and logging onto my connection - how do i do this ??

In simple words a complete computer numpty can understand, thank you please.

What router is connected to the end of the fibre?

Your wi-fi hub or router should be password protected.
On BT ones it's generally on the label as "WEP key" or something like that.

You only need to secure it if you have a wifi router Neil.

The wire that goes into your router.....that's the cable IN, but then what happens?
Does your laptop connect to that with a cable, or via wifi?

You need to tie a knot in the fibre-optic cable whenever you go out.............

That prevents people from accessing your line.

A reef knot or a "Chinese dhoby-hitch" would be my preference.

Okay, here we go... hold tight
Click on Start then Run and type cmd and then press enter.
In the Black window that pops up type ipconfig /all (a space after the g) and then press enter.
You will then see somewhere in the results 'Default Gayeway' and then some numbers.
Now open a Web Browser, in the web browser enter that number into the address bar, will probably be something like 192.168.*.* and press enter.
Then work out from there how to set your security.... your time starts now and you have 1 hour to complete this task
