How do I update my 2820?

My 2820, just about a year old, was sometimes, seriously lacking on a 2 week trip to the south of France, how do I update it? how much will it cost?

The maps were out of date, I was driving along some lovely roads that weren't on the GPS, same happened in Lanzarote in January. Another weird thing it offered me a better route, little triangle appears on the screen, I was 150 miles and 2 1/2 hours from Le Havre, new route came up as 182 miles and 4 hours!!

Have you registered with the Garmin website? Updates are available, some are free some are not....

Just done my 2620 with V9, mine came free with a new unit but you can buy it and down load the info.

Make sure you're unit is registered with Garmin otherwise you will not be able to update, I think your has the hard drive like mine, takes about an hour to overwrite everthing, been out today to try it and everthing spot on.

The maps were out of date

I'd guess you need to start here: http://www8.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp

But, CN v10 is going to be out in the winter I'd guess, so it may be worth waiting for it.
