Forget checking the level, make sure you've got anti-freeze in it, it's going to be cold tonight

you can check it in the oil level window. coincidently, it looks just like oil

dont take any notice of the chaps taking the piss, just make sure (for optimal running) that the crankcase oil seals are not leaking. It makes a tappeting sound on the left hand cylinder if theyre knackered.

I check mine every time i lube my drive chain.

It's actually very easy.

I look via the remote therometer (probe in the garden) I have in the kitchen whilst I'm eating my brekkie. I have the probe mounted exactly at the mean height of the cylinder centres - air temp=coolant temp.

If you double the temperature reading and then divide by the number of pots, you can work out the coolant temp working on each cylinder.

Into smartarse mode:

Surely the oil is, al least in part, the coolant - therefore checking the oil is checking the coolant level. Try running the bike without the oil cooler and see how hot it gets

I never check the coolant as I can't be bothered removing the diagonal steam trap. It's a bugger to get back on without resetting the flux capacitor.
