I've registered my new Zumo and it tells me NT2009 is available but when I add the Numaps free update to my basket it want me to pay £60.
Is there a knack to it?

Then I'd guess you wont get a free update.

Its looking that way but the garmin website says you get a free update within 60 days of registering.
Guess i'll have to to ring support and waste a few hours of my life....

When I contacted Garmin about this, they said it was 60 days from first using the GPS, where 'using' meant turning it on and off a number of times, or it having been turned on and moved a certain distance (to avoid shop demo units having too short a warranty).

I've found Garmin phone support to be very good in the past, so it shouldn't take too long to sort, one way or the other.

My understanding is that you only get your "free" upgrade if you register your unit after the maps are released - whatever date that is. So, the knack is to delay registering the unit until after the release date for the mapping you want. A bit late now though, as you've already registered it.

One of the Zumo's housekeeping routines will be "Do I think I have been bought and am now in use?" and if it does, it will store the info in its backup memory. That information gets communicated to Mapsource when you use it, and then on to Garmin while you're registering.

It's too late for me since mine was bought secondhand and had already been registered, but it would be interesting to try a factory reset BEFORE registering it on the website.

The rule is this

If your unit when purchased has a more up to date map available then you have 60 days from purchase to register and download your free map.

If when registering and within 60 days from purchase your unit has an older map on it and you are asked to pay for the upgrade contact garmin support.

I had to do exactly this and they were very helpful, the support guy gave me his email address and asked me to mail him a copy of the receipt which i could do easily as my zumo was from amazon, within 1 hour the free download was available on my garmin account with a unique code to activate it.

Its not about when you registered it its about when you actually purchased the unit and making sure you do it within the 60 day period.

And the answer is

You have to switch it on and get a satellite fix before you register the unit , then it tells garmin its new and can it have a free map.
Support sorted me out.....

Steve

Glad you are sorted..............now all you have to do is wait the 2 hours it takes to download the map and a further 2 hours to install it :blast worth it though :thumb

I'm sure they know what they're talking about, but I understood that GPS units were just receivers and not transmitters. :nenau

Now my head hurts. :D

It's OK, Big Brother's not watching you* - the info from the GPS gets transmitted back to Garmin, over the Internet, via the PC you use to register it :thumb2

*Any more than usual

I've had several mapping updates for my Quests through Garmin and never had to pay for any. I've just sent off for the latest Zumo DVD and it hasn't cost me anything, so far! Now if I have to pay for the unlock code then I'll just use it as a coaster!!
