Winter project ( one of) .

Has anyone got a link to a "how to do it" post on removing, stripping and re-building a final drive for a 1200GS?

Using the search function has so far come up with lots of moans but no how-to.

There is one in the links at the top of the 1200 page, might put you off though:beer:

If yours is an Aug 06 to Aug 08 bike, feel free to make an offer on my never-used and unmarked unit......bought for my 07 bike before finding out it was manufactured pre Aug 06.....

@patzx12 who did his 06 is an engineer. Me made various fixtures to hold it down while he removed/torqued up the bolts.

There is also a thread on ADVrider that discusses an angular contact bearing in place of the usual deep groove type. It's on an 1150 but it makes engineering sense to me as the other end is carried by a taper roller bearing.

Here's the 1150 angular contact bearing -

When the wheel bearing fails it will cause the taper bearing inside the case to flap about - excessive clearance. That has to affect the gear meshing and to my mind could over stress the pinion bearing. This is why I would change the pinion needle bearing at the same time as the wheel bearing. Even on a post 06 bike with the (slightly) larger needle bearing.

Angular contact bearing will not work on a 1200. The 1150 has a taper bearing on the small end so it makes perfect sense to use an angular contact bearing with this. The 1200 though has a needle roller bearing in the small end, if you used a taper or angular bearing on the big end you will get wheel wobble because there isn't anything to preload it against. Basically the angular bearing will stop the shaft coming out but there isn't anything to stop it going in.

Undo everything until it falls apart :thumb2

If it doesn't fall apart, hit it with increasingly large hammers until it does :thumb2:thumb2

It won't It's tight as FUcccccccccccccccccccck!

DON'T It's soft as FUuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccccck! and will deform!!

Basically they are NOT a home job requiring some decent heavy equipment to disassemble

That's a shame. The BL/Austin/Rover Mini had a taper roller and angular contact bearings on the front wheels in the 1150 FD format. They were pretty much bullet proof.

I guess if the 1200 deep groove gets too bad it would be wise to change the needle on the other end, but small amounts of lateral play wont hurt anything inside.

You obviously don't have a big enough hammer :D

Where? Been through it twice now and failed to find it.

Here:

Click on the 4th sticky link down, the one that says "►►► Useful links and How-to Guides for 1200GS Owners *** Updated 31st July 2012"

Then click on the link that says "- The Insides of a 1200 Final Drive"

If you can't find those then you are well and truly banjaxed.

Excellent. Thanks Bendy Toy.

Do you have a Beneteau boat - just wondered cos thats what we refer to them as, Bendy Toys.

I do have A Suzuki GT750 complete with flexible frame that's just about up to what the engine can make.

Originally I had Ben Detoy but some folks thought it was a real name. :) Its just a play on words.

Stripped and rebuilt my 06 F/D 3yrs ago and it's still going strong.
I bought the bearings & seals via my BMW dealer.
I have the part numbers if required.
I followed the instructions on the REPROM, took my time and all went well.
I'd recomend taking pictures as you strip it down, for reference on the rebuild.
Have a go, what have you got to loose.
