How far can I go in the Alps from Geneva in six days?

if its ideas of routes you are after you could do a lot worse than downloading the master route file from this link posted up by wapping.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/i5vgad0nlw...02016.GDB?dl=0

be aware its a big file with a multidude of routes and may take a while to open, and i have no doubt that there will be something of interest in it for you.

Unlike the big breasted waitress in Rudi's bar, Zug you only need to go up it once... And compared to the price of a coffee in that place where all the G8 / G10 / G20 bods meet (verrrrrry smooth road up) it's peanuts.

Davos, that's it.

A couple of us ran up to Lauterbrunnen on the bikes and got the train up to Kleine Scheidegg at the base of the Eiger (60CHF) , not a bad day for the money.

Eiger North Face

Ready for the accent , it was hot that day.

if you are in the area The Hotel Oberland in Lauterbrunnen is my reccomendation, the owner Mark is a dab hand with a blowtorch (yes that is a FD...mine!)

I really like Stelvio - yes, there are other better passes...but Stelvio is iconic....the west side can be a trap for young players....hairpins in tunnels....:D

I've been really lucky and have had good runs...but, yes it can be awful.

What Donnie said!
Andermatt is a great place for a base.
You could go from there over the Oberalp pass (I especially like it) to Chur and on to Livigno and Bormio then do the west side only to the top of the Stelvio then return over the Umbrail pass back to Chur and on to Andermatt the opposite direction (it'd be like two different roads).
Get out some maps and enjoy yourself.

That would be a great option - the Oberalp is a nice run, and it starts right in Andermatt...

redsmartie, you might find this site handy:

http://www.myswitzerland.com/en-gb/...rbike-tours-route-descriptions.html?iPadCover

Ignore the link to 'Tour de Suisse on a motorbike' and look at all the rest.

For example, have a look at Motorbike Tour East West Stages I, II and III not least as they directly involve Geneva.

You and your chums could make yourself a really good six-day tour in and around Switzerland by adopting and adapting all / any of the suggested and well detailed tours. If you find yourself miles away from Geneva on the last day, just be sensible and jump on the motorway. Yes, you'll have to do some work but it won't be too difficult or take too long to do.

Down the Route des Grande Alpes and up the Route Napoleon, across the Col de Croix de Fer up through Annecy and back to Geneva.
(doing most of the above this year in 5 days)

That's the one, add in the gorge de Verdon

I second/third that having done it a few times.

To fine tune it,when you ride back up the Route Napoleon, after Digne Les Bains take the D900A to Barles and you will pass through the most amazing 'hidden' gorge just before Barles :

Spot the bike

Then take a left after Barles on the D7 and go over the very gnarly Cold Du Fanget and rejoin the Route Napoleon before Grenoble.

I'm not an expert on Switzerland, but how many would go there if not for the mountains, or a place to stash ill gottens? It's clean and tidy and well ordered, and pretty. Perhaps that is enough for most, but people who ride motorcycles?
I find it often a bit Disney like and despite the above "advantages" somehow lacking that je ne sais quoi?

The roads are a bit bland because they have the cash to do them "properly" unlike France, where the very precariousness of some, like Arsey's photo above, adds much to the experience. And of course there are so many more miles of roads in France (and other co-joined places). Which is why there are more people on your thread saying go to France or elsewhere.

Its coming together especially with the help from Donnie. I've taken his ITN files and can see the basis of a route. I don't have access to a PC at the moment (Mac user) and the online conversion to GPX shows straight lines between waypoints in Basecamp but I get the idea of which roads might have been taken.

Once we get to Andermatt the route Donnie gave me matches the detailed route files I downloaded off the Myswitzerland site for the four pass ride and East to West routes stage 2 and 3.

I'm going for the Toblerones

Once again. Big thanks to Donnie. I used the suggested software www.tyretotravel.com and it did a perfect job making the GPX files from the IPS. :beerjug:

Watch that loop right at the top right near Luzern. It should just loop around over the two passes, the glaubenbielen & the glaubenberg. There's about 100 metres of smooth unsurfaced at the top which is probably why it shows like that. Sometimes these apps do funny things but it will be ok once loaded to a sat nav.

I zoomed in and I can see the road. How did you do it? Figure of 8? And does that mean you went over the glaubenbielen & the glaubenberg twice on day 5?

I'm not so sure. I've had terrible experience with routes on the Navigator V when you deviate from the path. I do plan on some trial runs.

My initial reaction was that the routes were spot on but I think on day 5 we may wing it if I can't get the Garmin to adjust this route. Its awkward because it looks like a figure 8. Unless I redraw the track from scratch for that day.
