Avoiding anything which is considered an "attraction" or touristy can have you finding small family run places like this http://www.hotellaposte.fr/hotel-espinasses-hautealpes-paca.html
Normal for France sort of place, not fancy, but when I was there a few years ago, all the things I wanted. Warm (outside was cool) decent bed, decent shower, quiet, and friendly.
Food was unfussy but substantial, fitting the needs of that cool evening. There did seem to be a lot of locals in the dinning room.
Big space at the back for parking - I notice that they claim special facilities for cyclists and bikers (?).
With an adjoining bar.
Situated at the west end of Lac Serre Poncon, the D3 heading east is a nice twisty road along the lake. You can detour up into the hills too.
We were heading for somewhere else, but glad we stumbled up here, after the original target destination in Barcelonette was closed/full, pressing on rather than deal with the crowds and traffic.
