I drove for 21 miles tonight with the fuel warning light on before i lost my bottle, how far should you expect to go, i don't want to know how many litres the hand book says i've got left, i want the real world expectation - any idea you lot -

When I had a 22l tank on my Adv, I ran out at 37 miles (deliberatley, to see what it would do). I managed to run out (unplanned) 23 miles after the light came on with the 31l tank - but that was doing 95-100 (actual) into a strong headwind. I reckon I'd start feeling uncomfortable at about 28-30 miles if I was trying to run economically. The best way to find out is to strap a can to the back & try it out.....

Mike:)

Iv'e done 35 miles from the yeller light, but like mike O says all bikes are different there's only one way to find out , put a 5ltr can in the pannier and ride till it stops, note the mileage from the yeller light coming on.

43 miles from fuel light coming on to running out but in between a cold start in the morning and a mix of round town and motorway .

ran out on the forecourt of petrol station thankfully!!

64miles,1100 that is.
Every time I change the fuel filter, I strap a can on the back, and let the bike run dry, as the fuel level gauge gets knocked about when you change the filter.
The bike is in a million bits in the garage at the moment, having everything done, so I'll let you know how it goes in a few days.

I've had 60Miles but have had to rock the bike about to get the petrol from the left lobe to the right lobe. Plus remeber Vern and Me have the plastic tank which is a bit bigger. And that the guage is fixed on a floater which is easily bent so the light can come on earlier or later depending on the bike.

Well, my light comes on at aroun 19l used, meaning I've got a theoretical 4.5l left. Running around 8m/l I'd start getting worred after about 30 miles. However, usually I don't do more than 20 after the light comes on.

Ermmmm....

You've a 22ltr tank so when the light comes on check the milage and when you fill up see how many liters are required .... Then do some kind of calculation to know the liters avalible after the light came on.

The most I've done to a tank is 223 and it took 21.7ltrs... the msot the tank took was 22.3ltrs.

The best method I think is to know how many miles you get per liter then always set your trip at fill up

Talk about living dangerously........

Well, once the light comes on I either fill up on the way to work or fill up on the way home. The commute is 35 miles so....

How far

I've got a 30l tank on my Adv. and the other day I ran it for 44 miles on the warning light. Got to the petrol station near home and put 30l in it!

Running on fumes I guess for the last mile or so.

Filled mine up yesterday.27lts from bone dry, including a new fuel filter. Now to see how far it goes. It's normally 230-240 before the fuel light comes on. Watch this space

As a man who had to push the GS 2 km up a hill on a Frebch motorway this is a subject close to my heart.

Basically it depends on the speed.

The yellow light normally comes on with about 4 litres left. At around 100mph I get about 8 miles per litre.

At 80-90 I get about 10 mpl.

At 50-60 on an A road I get about 12 mpl.

Generally if the light comes on I tend to slow down unless I know there's a fuel station within about 20 miles.

I've had nearly 35 miles with the yellow light on and put in 21 litres when I eventually filled up but those 35 miles were ridden at a steady 45 mph.

Something I was told early on when I got a GS was that the light comes on earlier on the motorway as petrol isn't being moved into both sides of the tank by cornering, braking etc. I was also told to lean the bike over (can't remember which way) to get petrol from one side to another. Don't know how true it is though :D

Cheers

Dick
