How far over 12k for valve check is acceptable?

I bought my bike with 10600 miles and the service indicator said c.5k miles to next service, happy days! However when I spoke to the service dept today they said the valves are due at 12k, when I asked if they could wait until my 15k service along with end of warranty check he advised that any warranty claim relating to the engine could be voided by an overdue service. I have to say coming from a Ducati where a valve service is £1200+ the cost of £350 for valves, oil, filters (oil and air) drive shaft oil change all actually seems quite reasonable!
So how far can I reasonably go or should I just bite the bullet and get it done in what’s now only 800 miles and go back to the non franchise dealer that sold me it (2weeks ago) with my hand out for a contribution!

Get it done for peace of mind. I cannot see why the selling dealer would be responsible for a service item due some 1400 miles after the purchase date. The duty is on you to explore potential expenditure on service procedures due under your ownership.

In the same situation,

Time based i needed a service , mileage based not near 32k mileage (36K) the service mileage

So they did a split service - everything except the valve clearances

So at 36k they will do the valves (£150+vat)

i'm going away just before then , ive mapped my mileage and i should have 82 miles to play with - i will run it to that and see what they say, or i will do

another weeks worth of riding, and get it to them

Ideally you want to be cock on or as near to the magic number - far easier to do it, than to have any potential claim rejected

Laughable idea the dealer should contribute to this. You should have done your own research before purchasing and factored this service into the price of the bike!

Buy in haste, repent at leisure. At the end of the day he can only say no, this is the 5th bike I’ve bought off him, so I would hope for a bit of goodwill

Fair point, a case of buyer beware, I’m new to BMW boxers and thought that when the bike said 5k to next service, that it meant exactly that. The cost is of a minor concern, I’m more interested in what would be deemed an acceptable period of time over the 12k miles

For peace of mind I would get the valve check service done, then you are covered. As a general rule the water cooled boxer engine is bulletproof, there was a batch of bad cams a while back that affected a small minority of bikes, so ask the mechanic to check for wear on the cam nodes.

As for the valve clearance needing adjustment on 99% of w c boxers they won’t need to be, as they very very rarely go out of spec.

Welcome to the forum, and enjoy your bike.

15000k service? No such thing

Firstly, you don't say what bike you own. For the sake of argument, I'm going to assume it's a 1200LC.

I'm a BMW tech. I have checked THOUSANDS of valve clearances on all types of bikes. And probably hundreds if not a thousands of 1200LCS.

It's INCREDIBLY rare to need any adjustment at 12,000 miles. It's rare at 24,000 miles even.

However, it takes about 15 mins to check the valves on any boxer (assuming you don't have crap engine bars which prevent access). So it's not really a big deal. I'd do that for £40 if you came to my workshop.

The 12,000 mile service is expensive at a dealer because you're changing plugs, air filter too etc. And a dealer charges you at least double for all these parts and fluids and then £100ph for the labour.

FYI, I charge about £250-£290 for the full 12,000 BMW service and I use all genuine parts and it's far more thorough than your dealer would be.

You need to find a quality independent workshop. Your warranty is NOT affected for not using a main dealer during your warranty period.

The last service was 8.8k so the next oil service is 14.8, or 12months, obviously service timing s are out of sync

Thanks, I’ve a 1250, Jan 19 so probably one of the early ones, I’ll go dealer whilst still in manufacturers warranty and then go independent thereafter. Now to find a good one in Northern Ireland

Nice pitch.
For future reference where you based?

I would definitely have them checked.
At my 12k service, they finally accepted mine was noisy on the Right side, I needed a new Camshaft (done under Warranty)
I saw the old camshaft, and it did have the failed "DLC" as they call it (Diamond Like Coating)...
Cheap shite!

For future reference - you would adjust shift cam valves?

If it’s in guarantee it’s worth getting it done, for reference my dealer charges 74 euros for a valve check on a 1200 boxer

For the 20,000 km service I paid for the valve check & brake fluid change and did the rest myself

My local BMW dealer quoted me £295 for 12k service inc brake fluid. Hope that included the Vat :blast
