MMMM so sadly the HP2E went...alarmingly quickly to a good friend, maybe I can get it back one day, the GSA is here and phewee its not small, after wishing the HP to have a slightly better seat and slightly bigger tank and slightly bigger screen and slightly better pillion rests for the occasional passenger I now have a large sofa with excellent footboards, a sail as a screen and a fuel range of 375 mile when full according to the Onboard Computer..(except I don't seem to be able to reset the damn TRIP) anyway I've now ditched the carrier frames and any other gubbins to reduce weight...
I did wonder though what is the real weight of an HP2E, a normal GS sans luggage and a GSA sans luggage frames....the GSA book said 256KG empty...Gulp if I'd known that before I'd still have a blue frame....anyway it was very comfy and I was even too hot on a 120 mile trip through Welsh mountains....not so quick through the twistys and nowhere near the woomph...but hey I CAN if I want go a long way now......
so come on HOW HEAVY are they really?

HP2E...............in the 170kgs region dry, I expect

175kg but it feels like more when it's ontop of you after a tumble:blast

I upgraded :D to the HP2 from the ADV thereby downsizing :augie I had also lightened my ADV as muchg as possible but at the end of the day is while very capable for what it is ... is a fat momma when the going gets tough!

The 50kg lighter HP2 is BIG IN BIKE TERMS. I have adventurised my HP2 and now have a very happy and capable machine - underseat Markus tank gives me good range ... have fitted an Adv screen, KTM passenger pegs etc etc
See: http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=33547.0

I would not go back now to the ADV unless I am only going to do tar and meek gravel highways.

He he he I told you guys he will be back :D

My guess is any bike starts to gets heavy after a few tumbles. During a bike trip through Namibia the heat gets you so badly that even two big blokes struggle to pick up a bike eventually.

The GSA is a beast in it's own right and very capable if you prepared to ride outside your comfort zone. The HP2 give you that bit of confidence to ride like a Dakar Hero eventhough you think in your mind I am gonna die :beerjug:

I brought my first HP2 the same time I brought the 1200 Adventure. The first thing I did was got rid of a brand new adventure and spent the money on making my HP2 lighter. I know have 4 HP2's and I would not dream of selling any of them. One only has 700 miles on the clock, and is mint and that is the way I intend to keep her.:oonyack

Bliemy, I am really worried now, despite the comfy seat and bulk keeping crap weather off me its still real heavy, the old HP was indeed a Gazelle.....I shall calll the new owner...

which gs have you bought simon? which is the best all rounder? hp2 or gs?
Define best all rounder?

1/If you mean can I commute on a HP2E? Yes

2/If you mean can I ride for 200 miles on one tank, on a HP2E? No

3/If you mean can I ride a light weight wheeling, stoppieing, rip-rawing, corner drifting, snarling devil rather than a over weight snug? Yes

4/If you mean a heavy weight comfortable tourer, with every electrical piece of gizmo shit from touratat? Then NO HP2E is not the bike for you

5/If yes to question 4/ and you have no intention of riding off road other than Tesco's car park:rolleyes:, buy a Honda GOLDWIG :blast:augie

Best bike I've owned even with all it's Foibles and boy has it got some:eek::pullface

best allrounder......well where shall I begin

mmmmmm well its been chucking it down big time and blowing a gale in Grim Wales today and the GSA won this contest for lights, brakes, comfort, screen, protection, roadholding, non-dive brakes......but thats because its a bloody big lump, no desire to go fast happy to be protected around welsh lanes in dark and leaf/muck strewn roads....I can see where I'm going with lots of KG holding me tyres down......
But when you get on the GSA it aint got the woosh factor, or the grin factor, or the ooooheerrr factor, nor the look in the shop window factor, GSA=Charley+ewan, HP2 = Nick Plumb or similar Dakar Man.....park HP up and people go hmm whats that strange and purposeful machine, Park GSA and they go how is you midlife crisis is it as big as you midriff......????
With all due respect the answer to Q is the GSA is by far the best all rounder, it can go a long way without a batting of eyelids, gas stations, irrespective of weather with pillion etc yet can also potter down a green un......It cannot belt along for an hour or so pissing off R1 owners in mountains and then heading off up a forest track.....mindyou, I have never run out of petrol so many times, had such a sore arse even after ludicrous spend on upgrade of a new seat, had scary moments doing emergency stops on road in Traffic, I have gone really fast and really slow and loved it, I miss it but if I had to go a long way I would go mmmmmmmm GSA Now I just get on.... key in off....
Does that kind of answer the Question

After owning an HP2e and now own an 08 ADV plus an 08 X Challenge I would have to say you need two bikes. The HP2 was great but too heavy for tight hilly sections and to much of a compromise for long rides. So now having both the ADV and the X Challenge I feel I have the best of both worlds.

ahah a man after my own heart, I bought a virtually new X challenge from a good friend at a super price for a 1500 miler, sadly it was just too damn high even after fiddling lowering here and there its was just too scarey.....sadly being so shiney I got the ooh don't want to mess it up....mindyou it did feel very good off road...I have an old 2002 Husaberg FE which is really good but needs registering to get about on, I am unsure of how good the Berg would be pottering the roads bewteen the green lanes for any distance I hear horror stories about Oil pumps and engine blow ups......The GSA is very functional as a globetrotter and commuter but I would feel nervy going on any really rough stuff whereas the Hp was superb at blasting over open rough ground and the half mile enduro track to the damn house.....ahhh compromise.....the green grass is always calling from yonder.......too many choices too many options....I remember when poverty stricken just having one ratty old DT400 followed by XT600 went everywhere without a blink......

I rode two sections of the dawn to dusk race on my HP2 and a GSA I was lent....I liked them both each was good however... The HP2 is a beauty which I'll keep forever and my 1150 well that's an iconic bike which will never go either. The 1200GSA we'll there's just too many about so I just won't bother with that one...

but i might keep the GS450 I bought that's a bit of fun alright....

so for me at the moment it's..... In the red corner at 175Kg the clear winner by a smiles the HP2E/ HPN hybrid monster I've got!

:augie

Well hello again, sadly as lovely as it is the GSA will go, the HP2 spoilt me, I need to find a nice good nick HP2 low miler ideally although what does that mean 12,000 is low but if crusty NO but shiny and loved maybe yes.....whatever have considered KTM adv as compromise between GSA and HP, more compact than BMW although slabby big thing, thye GS has a lovely mechanical proper motorbike ness to it, exposed engine and stuff, tanks, frames etc...yet the KTM is still big enough tank, grunty lighter than GSA better dual seat slimmer and all that.....who knows give it a go....The GSa doesn't feel anywhere as comfy on the mile dirt track to house yet feels great on the road, better road suspension and brilliant brakes as for 33 litres of fuel well its heavy but no real issue, the reality was it felt almost big tourer not an adventure machine for me...so we see what we end up with, right now GSA for sale....see for sale section

Good luck in your search - it seems quite a few people who sell them, thinking they will be okay without, soon come back looking for one :augie

I did so many miles on mine using it for everything - commuting, 2up touring and playing in the dirt but I knew I my HP2 was a keeper so I bought a GSA to abuse commuting, keeping the HP2 for playing. Now when I'm in London, I'm not so worried about my bike being nicked over night - I can always find another GSA.
