How long can delay the first service?

First service in most BMW is with 1000km (600miles). Mainly dealer changes the original oil and filter and checks electronic bugs.

My question is how many Km may I pass this limit? I'm thinking to do a 2000 km trip before first BMW service with my new GSA.

Any trouble for the engine? Need to change oil for myself before?

Thanks

I think you may have difficulty with the warranty if you go over 1000 miles (1600 Km) before getting the service done, at least that was what I was told with my first BM.

10% over was what I was told before the warranty's compromised. I'd also say your first service is the most important as it's the one where the oil carries most of the swarf from initial running in. Plus, maybe, it's the one they re-torque various bolts.

Why not ask the dealer?

I would think that BMW put a safety factor in their equation (other than warrantee issues) with the 600 mile service limit. However, I would think that it was "the" most important one, for reasons previously noted.

Mine was over 800 miles when I got it done IIRC....no prob with warranty claims after that either.

Change the oil though...the stuff they put in on delivery is thing stuff to let the engine bed in I believe...and it won't do any harm anyway.

BTW, 1000km =625 miles....plus the 11xx was 10% out on mileage anyway (wrong gearing ratios in drive unit), so technically the first one on 11xx's wasn't even due until over 687 miles ;)

(sounds petty but multiply that difference up when you get towards the 36k mile service and it's a big big difference.......to many people are getting their 11xx's serviced to often :) )

Premature servicing can happen to anyone, you can usually delay the later ones, but the first time is normal to get it in as soon as you can, and then out straight away. So your ready for the next event . I'm sure most of us were the same on our first one.

It helps if you think of how much your saving on the first service, sometimes you have to pay for the lube, much better if you can find a free one.

As it gets older, you can delay it without much trouble, but you'll still find those that like to keep it by the book, some can be pretty anal in this respect .

Is it just me, or are there about four different levels of innuendo in that?

A stroke of genius Steptoe
