I know this is one of those questions akin to how long is a piece of string, but I would be interested to hear your views.

I have a pair of summer gloves that were purchased in May 2009. They have been used only during the summer, mainly when using my bike for the commute to work. I have also used another pair of gloves so they have not been subjected to constant use. A hole has developed in the finger tip of the left hand, but there are no other signs of wear or tear on any other part of this glove. The right hand glove is also free of signs of wear and tear.

The gloves have a two year warranty but the supplying dealer has rejected the claim under warranty citing that the hole is "fair wear and tear".

I have a pair of winter gloves which are from the same manufacturer which have seen five winters of use, but have not shown the same level of "wear and tear".

I will post up some photos so you can see the level of wear in due course.

I have a pair of Furygan summer gloves (no padding whatsoever) that I bought in 1991 that are still going strong, and they've had a lot of use...

A piece of string indeed. In my world, a pair of gloves should last for years and years, I got 6 years and about 100k miles out of a pair of £110 Alpinestars and felt cheated, but I am a Yorkshireman.

A couple of summers use before holing is pretty crappy, if they're a decent brand glove. After all they're supposed to be strong enough to offer some protection from tarmac rash if needed.

I have a pair of Bmw atlantis gloves. Really comfy and good feel. They remained waterproof for 2 years and 1 day. now they pish water in :blast

Age has got pretty much feck all to do with it really, how many miles have you ridden wearing them?

I've got a pair of gloves that don't fit me, and they've been in the bag for about 9 years, and guess what, yep, they're perfect.

I have a pair of Alpinestars 365 that I bought just under a year ago. Worn just about every day for commuting and a couple of weeks ago I felt a hole develop where the lining was pulling away from the leather inside the thumb.

Took them into HG and said I had a problem. Bloke took a new pair off the rail, gave them to me and said problem solved.

I tend to go through gloves at about 1 pair every two years with every day use, tends to be the stitching that goes first.

BMW GS gloves. twice to Gambia, once to morocco, 65k miles commuting & offroad and 8 years later they were falling to bits. I thought BMW gear was supposed to last:(:(:(

Mine all tend to wer out in either the thumb web area on the left glove or the index finger on the right glove. I think it depends on how you use your hands whenriding (ooh missus!).

Usually get about 10k miles out of light weight goretex gloves before any wear at all.

One pair of HGs did huge miles and ended up a very fetching bronze colour.

Try the manufacturer or importer - either at a trade stand if you happen to be going to a show or write directly.

They might be more willing to replace the gloves, especially if they spot a manufacturing defect like thinner leather than normal or failed stitching.

I had a pair of HG own make gloves that they replaced right at the end of the 2 year warantee. The stiching was coming undone on one of the finger tips. Go back and ask to speak to the manager be polite but very firm, when the shop is busy is best as it puts a bit more pressure on them.

Ok, time for naming of the manufacturer and some photos of the offending gloves.

They are BMW Pro Summer gloves and they were purchased in April 2009. They have been used for a maximum of 8000 miles over two summers.

You can see it is only worn on the one finger, the rest of the glove is showing no signs of wear and tear. My wife has a pair of the same gloves which have seen more use than mine and they are also showing no signs of wear at all.

BMW Customer Services have been as much use as a one legged man in an arse kicking contest and are refusing to get involved. They seem to think that a glove that starts to fall apart after two summers use is acceptable.

I am going to approach the dealer again and speak to the principle before I name and shame them.

i like the bmw gloves myself.but never actually gave them a time frame, when they wear out they wear out.just like boots.

I'm pleased to say this has now been resolved. After e-mailing the BMW GB managing director I was contacted by Harkan Suleyman of customer services, who has agreed to replace the gloves!:)
