I'm thinking of swaping my 1999 R1100S for a 1200GS, but if I bought new, how many years would it last? 6500 miles per year. I need to convince mrs 2679 that this would be a good idea ;)

How long is a piece of string? I rode a '57 Norton last week so I assume anybike has the ability to last a very very long time under the right circumstances.

if it's a 1200 about three minutes!

I know, I know, don't all start getting ratty it was only a joke :P

It all depends on how it is ridden and maintained. Someone once wrote that if a modern car was maintained like a jumbo jet, it would last 10,000 years. If your bike is ridden sensibly, maintained properly and never involved in an accident, I reckon a good 10 years at least. I have a 7 year old Yamaha YZF600R which still looks like new, 45,000 miles and sweet as a nut. I'm a marine engineer and a stickler for things being right, so she got a full chassis rebuild last year. My 1200GS has 18,000 miles on it but it is only a year old so I had better start taking things easy if I'm going to reach the ten year mark with her.

Maybe I asked the wrong question? I was thinking about general deteriation, looking at my 1100S alot of the engine paint is falling off & the rear subframe looks like it could do with a coat of paint, I've not owned the bike from new & most of the corrosion had already started before I bought it. The engine paint is the only part that really pisses me off:( Is the 1200GS engine painted with the same paint? or is there some trick to make a new bike last?

I think your 1100 will out last a new 1200...both should be still around in 10 years time,,,but i know which one will have had the most faults :D

Mine usually last 12-18 months but, I have a low boredom threshhold and a high credit rating :D

My 1950 matchless (350 g3l rigid) still runs well although at at steady pace 50mph cruising
