I bought a 1150 GS mod 2002 white-blue with 85000KM on the clock. It has a new clutch plate and it looks like new but i wonder how many miles has it got before problems start to pop up? Also what should be the first thing i should check ???

Thanx a lot from a newbi on beemers

Hiya!

Sounds like you have brought a nice bike.

I haven't got a clue what will go wrong, but at 53k miles, it is hardly run in and because it will have been used (I suspect) on a daily basis, any gremlins will have been sorted - so the rest will be just wear and tear.

Check that it has had all its services and annual checks.

If in doubt change all of the oils, (engine, gearbox, final drive) and filters, (fuel, air, oil).

Check rocker end float and valve clearances.

Check that the alternator belt was changed at the correct time.

Check for movement at the back wheel. This can arise from either paralever wear or imminent failure of the output bearing in the final drive.

If you don't feel that your spannering skills are up to it go and see Steptoe or find a recommened independant service centre from other peeps on this forum.

If you have around £600 burning a hole in your pocket take it to a BM dealer for a major service and annual inspection.

the bike had all its services done at the right time and the alternator belt is new. If i find any freeplay at the back wheel how can i check if it is from the bearings and not the paralever?

Luckily enough i do most of the meintenance works by myself so i dont have to spend 600 quid:roll

If it's the bearing only the wheel will move when you apply force at either the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock position or the 12 and 6. This problem normally draws attention to itself in the dying miles by throwing the final drive oil al over the rear wheel. When mine did it a colleague came to tell me that there was a big puddle of oil under my back wheel!

If the para pivots are away, mine aren't yet at 36,000+, the final drive will move in respect to the "swing arm" section.

You can apparently take up some slack on these so search the forum for instructions.
