You could take a pigeon with you.
In the event of GPS failure you could tether the bird to your bars and follow it home.

Or send it home with a message for someone to send you a new GPS.

Works both ways. :thumb

leave a trail of breadcrumbs, never fails :thumb2

hi,

Where are you thinking of touring? - most countries have sign posts! 1 GPS and a map is more than enough:) If the GPS breaks (highly unlikley) you can use the map.

Good luck and don't worry you will be fine

2 GPSs???

Tom,
Long before GPS was thought up very brave souls travelled around the earth in boats powered by wind and navigated by the sun and stars.
Make it more of an adventure, buy a phrasebook and ask for directions.:augie

It may sound completely stupid but what if the primary (and only) unit fails? It would leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere.

So how many would you have?
I love my GPSs. I have one for each motorcycle. Both cars have GPSs. My sailboat has a GPS. I even have a GPS for my bicycle. But I have never even considered carrying a second GPS when I travel. Maps work just fine.

When I did Tossers-on-Tour 2005 - where, broadly, we stuck to a pre-planned route through Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Belgium and France, I had the entire route plotted on my Garmin 2610.

However, as a backup, I also loaded the entire route and waypoints onto my Geko 201.

Garmin products are in my experience extremely reliable. The most likely reasons for needing a backup would be from either dropping the 2610 or having it stolen.

But I only took the Geko because it could do the job and, more importantly, I already had it. I would not have entertained buying a backup unit.

You should change your name to GPSpencer

I wished I did have a backup device!

On the way home from Budapest the fecking thing lost power. That was half way through my day. Nice way to end your lunch ..

Off to France soon. Will take the 2610 for routing and my 60CSX for use as a speedo and geotagging so I know where I took my photos. And TomTom on my PDA. And a map. Possibly a compass (only joking...)
