Can I ask a numpty question, have been using this for a while with no problems
I am planning a Pyranees then up through france trip for next year (route all sorted)

Is there a recommended number of Way(shaping) Points I should use ? - I am sure I read the ideal is every 5 miles but that seems a hell of a lot on a big trip

=====

I’ve started yiu a fresh thread.

MyRoute recommends a shaping point every five kilometres (three miles). It’s advice which I adhere to.

The rule I use is to create daily routes, breaking up (in your case, a route of maybe 1,000 miles) into bite sized chunks, one route for each day. I create each route as well as I can in the MyRoute Routeplanner app on my iPad. I then use the ‘Expand’ function to add in the additional points. I then check it carefully.

Assuming you are not riding it in one day, breaking it down into smaller bite sized chunks means any 'nav device will not be overloaded with too many points.

If you have the Gold level, it does have an 'expand way points' setting. So you do not have to manually add in one every 3 miles.

Thanks Richard sounds like I need to upgrade to the gold version for the expand function currently only have silver

I'd agree with others on here and device the route into daily trips or if you don't know how far you are going to get at least divided it at Waypoint you know you want to hit. With the expand option zoom into each waypoint created and make sure its on the road on the "Here" map and not off to the side and on the correct carriageway for any dual carriageways/motorways you are using. If you have the waypoints list visible on the left of the screen panel if you Zoom into a waypoint to make sure its OK then click on the next on the list it will go to that point at the zoom level you previously used. This makes checking all your waypoints very speedy without any scrolling across the map. Also try to ensure that any waypoints are at least 50-100m away from junctions as navigation can get a bit confused if they are closer.

I usually break my trips into time rather than distance taking on board any likely stops along the route.
I break the trip into 5 hours riding.
Usually by the time I have stopped to look at nice views, castles or whatever that is enough for a days riding.
I put in 30 way/shaping points per day too.

I have gold membership, so adding and removing waypoints is much easier as mentioned above.
Just run your eye along the route after adding the shaping points to double check where they are.
You can than make any final amendments as needed.

Thanks all, I have upgraded to Gold and used the expand and like magic I now have a fully sorted route

I did a Pyrenees trip this year on MRA and used 10-12 points per day. All went well apart from day 4 where the satnav was desperate to put me on the peage to Toulouse... I would definitely use more waypoints if planning it again.

Thanks, yes I have discovered that in the tinkering I have done so far

Excellent.

Now check all the points are positioned correctly. Five minutes spent now, might translate to an hour spent locally, broiling in the sun.
