Since fitting a RR radiator protector on a 2008 GSA (which may or may not be a coincidence - fitting the protector, that is) I rarely get more than 4 bars on the RID when fully up to temp.

I'm sure it used to regularly reach 5.

The more bars there are the hotter the oil is running so it wouldn't make sense that by fitting a grill it would make it run cooler. If anything it would have the opposite effect. Just so long as it doesn't seize you'll be alright :comfort

It should run regularly at one / two / three blocks, heating up as you ride along.

Four it's getting hotter than three, Don't panic Mr Mannering..... It happens quite often.

Five it's getting hotter than four (We're doomed, I tell ye) which is hotter than three, which is hotter than..... Well, I guess it's obvious ;)

Thanks for the serious (and entertaining but not-so-serious) responses. Very helpful.

Quite right that you'd think an rad protector would, if anything, provide more insulation and impede cooling... I thought the same. And I've been riding in all weathers/temps so I know how the bike responds to different run conditions and weather.

Helpful to get your thoughts/observations. Much appreciated.

Doesn't make any difference, thermostat controls oil temp.

Whilst this is true, the temperature of the air on the oil cooler does seem to make a difference. I'm sure the thermostat controls it within a certain range though, and does not control it to the accuracy of a degree or so doesn't it?
