How much is it worth???

Hello All,

The girlfriend is after a F650GS Twin. She is a bit short so only the Low Chassis and Low Seat version is applicable.

Seen one with the following spec

2008 (08) – 1100 miles
Low Chassis and Low Seat
Heated Grips
Hand Guards
On-board Computer
Tall Screen
Top box plate (No box)
Alloy Bash Plate
BMW Crash Bars
Brake lever extended

This is from a BMW dealer so will also come with 12 months warranty and is priced at £5500.

I’ve had a look on Parkers but it doesn’t list this model/year. So over to you guys, given the current economical climate what do you think this bike is worth??

Also, things that I should be looking out for during the test ride tomorrow:

600 mile service done
Chain issues
Front axel replaced
Loose hoses
Clutch issues
Fuel tank splits
General clonks … Jesus, I’m talking myself out of buying this bike

Any thing else???

The price seems about right for such a low mileage bike. A new non ABS GS650 with the options such as lowering kit, computer and grips etc will cost you £6950, I have no idea how much the BMW? crash bars etc would add. There are two likely reasons for such a low mileage, the bike is a Pig and is so unreliable its owner lost interest, or the bike was for a newly qualified rider (Probably female with the lowering kit etc) who has not taken to biking as much as expected.
The warranty and after sales for BMW is so good its unlikely to be the Pig so you are probably looking at a genuine good bike.
When we got our first BM twin for my wife we also had the same "issues" worry but have found the bike to be 100% reliable. Her bike is an ex demo 08 bike, it had 3500m and had been dropped causing a small dent in the silencer and a broken toe guard plate, we paid £5200 but also got a very good part ex on an older GS650 single.
You can get the occasional bike on e-bay etc for a bit less but if the bike is everything you are looking for I don't think you will get one for much less.

The bike is at Rainbows, so as dealers go I don’t think there will be too many issues. http://www.rainbowmotorcycles.com/Usedbikes/page7/page4/page4.html. It will be my girlfriends first big bike since passing her test last year. She is on the 33bhp licence category and Rainbow has said they will put the restrictor kit on for the test ride (good service so-far)

Not sure if the crash bars are BMW but there defiantly seems to be some after-market part on there.

I only live about 1.5 miles away from Jefferies but finding a f650gs with the lowering option is still a bit of a rarity!

If she likes it then we will see what sort of price we can negotiate given the economy and the fact that its Jan and bloody freezing – why would anyone buy a bike at this time of the year

Why Not...you are!! It's a myth, a lot of bikes are sold in the winter. People generally feel they are going to get a better deal. So don't negotiate yourself out of a bargin

OK then, own up... who bought it before we got there

Got a call from Rainbow this morning telling us that the restrictor kit hadn’t arrived in the parts delivery. We hadn’t set off from Leeds so said that we may pop over to have a look anyway. Anyway, mistake one - we didn’t confirm that we were going and just set off.

Decided to go via Snake pass and mistake two was stopping off at Ladybower Inn for a chip butty as when we got to Rainbow the bike had been sold ! Looked nice and with the extras I think the price was right.

Anyway, had a good blast so not a compete wasted journey .

Sorry you missed out on the lowered 650GS. It's a great fun bike for new or experienced riders.

Has your girlfriend sat on a std height 650 with low seat?
She might find that she doesn't need the low chassis.
That way the red abs GS with 1700 miles at Rainbow might be a good bet? Daytona Ladystar's are an alternative to gain standover height without messing with the shock.

I'm only 5'2" and with Wilbers (which made the bike 1"taller than std ) there's no problem.

Rainbow are an excellent dealership; we're onto our 7th bike from them between us. If your girlfriend needs a lowered 650 I'm sure Rainbow will help sort it for her.

We saw the red one and tried it with the lowered seat but it was just a bit too big. Helen is 5’2” but I think her legs maybe a bit shorter than yours.

So it looks like the lowered chassis is the only option. We left our details with Ian at Rainbow so we will see what comes up. We’re in no rush as the bike will be used for a trip to Switzerland in June/July time.

As mentioned by Sooty, a bike of that spec new is £6900ish and will come with two years warranty. So, being a ‘loyal’ BMW rider, I wonder how much discount I could get off a new one? If for example I could get £500 (less that 10%) then this brings the price down to £6400. Theoretically, if you added the cost of a year’s warranty to the second hand bike you’re looking at £5,850 (Ian said it went for asking price, but then he would wouldn’t he). So for the extra £550 you’re getting a new bike. Obviously, the new one wouldn’t come without some of the extras - screen, crash bars, bash plate... but I see this as an opportunity to cover birthday/Christmas present for the next two years . There’s also the cost of the first service, but a bit of negotiation could get rid of this...

I think I’ll monitor the market for low chassis versions over the next couple of months and take a decision then.
