Up to now I've always left the servicing to the B*W dealer but it's about time to economise and do it myself so having got all the necessary tools like the oil change thingie and torque wrenches I am about ready to get going. I've orderd my super filter set from Mr Steptoe so - How much oil do I need to buy if I am doing a full change with filter ? The bike is a 1999 R1100GS.
Cheers

How much oil

Gecko,

4l of oil should be fine. The capacity is 3.75l or thereabouts.

I did mine at the weekend and had a bit left over from a 4l can of Castrol GPS.

Don't forget to replace the washer on the sump plug and don't overtighten anything. The oil filter especially has a very low torque setting, something like 12 Nm.

I do my interim (6k) services and it takes only about an hour or two, however, I leave my major (12K) services to a garage.

Cheers.

Jon

I use a measuring jug - knick the one out of the kitchen while the missus is out. Allow a little time for the fresh oil to settle and appear in the sight glass before filling to the correct level.

Cheers guys. Thanks for the tip about the sump washer - I'll pick one up in the morning.

Something to pass the time this weekend :D

Another question...? I have been offered some oil at a very cheap proce from my local petrol station which although old , is the right spec SG/CD oil fully synth motorcycle oil . What I'm wondering is does synth oil have a shelf life ? I reckon it's a couple of year sold but still in unopened sealed original containers .
Is it like wine , I mean will it go off x number of years after production or should it be OK ? Any thoughts guys ?

Unless your bike has done 12,000 + miles then its not run in yet so don't use fully synth oil, it should be ok for 8 years on the shelf so if its a good buy get it for later 20,000+ miles.

Jimb, I am at about 45000 miles and the dealer put fully synth in a while ago anyway so I think I'll stick with it. Cheers for the info on the shelf life - I think this stuff is only 2 maybe 3 years old tops and at less than 1/2 the price I can get Castrol R4 from Mr B*W I reckon it's worth taking.
