I was lucky in two senses: I discovered an oil leak caused by one of the two oil seals involved going without suffering any oil contamination of the clutch, and it happened during the guarantee period of my bike (bought secondhand, dealer's guarantee). So it cost me nothing to get it fixed.
However, there was clear evidence of the oil leaking, as the joint between engine and gearbox was weeping oil. So if a seal has gone, then you should be able to see an oil weep from the engine.
