how to access your 1190 air filter

I am contemplating fitting a DNA filter, and with this fantastic write up, I think I could tackle the job now, even with my somewhat limited knowledge.
However, I do not intend going off-road, and with UK weather, and road conditions ,it's unlikely that I will encounter really dusty conditions, so I am wondering if anyone doing the same sort of riding that I do, has found dust in their airbox (sound like a rather unpleasant medical condition :blast).
Also, presumably this could affect the KTM warranty?

there is a post on ADVrider of a guy from dorset with an airbox full of crap. no off road. unfortunately i cant find it now. i dunno about you, but my bike is often covered in road grit and debris when i get back from a ride, particularly in the wet, though TBH i've not heard of much problem in europe.

yes, i imagine it could cause some warranty issues, but maybe that's better than a fucked motor that you have to argue the toss with KTM about? it's a toss up really, but if i still have the original filter in my airbox, i can't really see a problem :nenau

Haven't KTM dealers in Aus being supplying the Unifilter kit gratis to 1190 owners - whilst not a KTM parent company initiative I'm sure that should go some way to alleviating warranty issues :nenau

yes, and i think saff ifrica too, but AFAICT KTM uk/europe claim it's not an issue. it could be a problem that only occurs when the airbox warps which might only happen when in very high ambient temps. i don't know? but it seems a funny stance to argue that the UNI at least causes any problem when their own agents supply them FOC because of problems with the OEM part :loopy

of course you could be in the same boat by fitting a non KTM supplied Akra exhaust.....

i think they'd need to prove the aftermarket part caused any problem. of course, in the real world, you'd might have to prove it didn't

UNI is certainly a very popular mod on ADVrider where there are a lot more 1190 owners than here. the general accepted wisdom there is buy bike, fit UNi or similar, then forget all about any airbox problem. there are more Rs to Stds there though, with short warranties - i thought it was 3 months, but it might be a year. certainly not 2 like here.

keep it standard - you know it makes sense.

Thanks for your input. Probably the best solution for me is to take the tank off and have a look in the airbox.Where is the best place to buy the DNA kit?

So Rob, are you gonna be a scooter boy or turn back to the Orange side? :D

Undecided Andres .the cost to change for both was too much .With the T Max it was £5000 .For the 1190 £2500 (2009 T Max 2014 GSA) so not worth doing . Liked both new bikes but want to hang on to the money from the house sale and do some travelling .Really liked the 1190 R though .I'll do it when I retire next year in April and get a lump sum :D:green gri

Cookie, nice post and easier than watching a video.

I have a new, never fitted (have opened the box to have a look) Unifilter, which I bought direct from Oz but have decided to go down the Rottweiller route.

Well, I'm half way through doing mine. An hour to get it all stripped and fit the new filter. Just got to put it back together now.

The old filter was reasonably clean still (1200 miles)with just the odd dead fly here and there. The airbox and inlet stacks were spotless .

The DNA filter has a stiffer 'frame' than the standard one and is a very snug fit. I've placed a thin layer of filter sealing grease on the trailing edge where the pivoting frame in the airbox locates against it. I've also made a thin RTV gasket around the lid. It's now back in place loosely done up. I'll give it an hour to go off a bit and then screw down tight.

Oh, and the tank is easier to get out if you remove the two silver panels so worth doing IMO.

Oh, and another thing, it's only 28 screws to remove so way easier to do than Cookies description :D

Ta again for the write up Cookie, it really helped :beerjug:
