My 4 year old son (1150MILLIMETERSANDSTOCKY) Sat on my bike today and pulled the front of the front seat straight out of the two retaining "mouldings" that hold the seat in place. The two that fit into the longitudinal bar used to adjust the height.
I did not tell him off, but I did get very angry at Mr BMUU for providing a cheap shite engineering solution. Had I chosen to do so I could have easily hinged the seat up and nicked/damaged whatever was under the seat in the shite little space provided.
I do not wish to be provocotive, however, BMUU seem to have built a bike down to a "high" price rather than up to a "high" specification. I personally find a lot of the detail on the GS of a lesser quality than I would like/expect to see.
My memory of my last BMUU, an R80 used for despatch riding in the late 80's is that of a bike that was more solidly built.
Am I expecting too much?
On this point was the seat on the older GS better engineered?
My Fat Boy seat has two allen head bolts and a very big steel tongue to hold it in place. (only removeable with tools).

On a positive note the bike is comfortable and fast enough.

Bonjour.

Know exactly what you talking about and no I don't think your asking too much. If you compair the advances Harley have made on their bikes in the last 10 years and the advances BMUU have made Harleys way ahead although they are probably behind overall mmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! is that making sence or are these night shifts really screwing with my head, let me know!!

and yes my old GS100PD was better put together and still looked amazing after 10 years abuse.

Just sold one of my Harleys that I bought for 6200 pounds six years ago for 5000 pounds not bad after doing 145000kms on it.

How much would I loose on a BMUU after that much time and milage.

register your son in the light light weight lifting category in the next Olympics?:) WTF does a popped seat have to do with BMW being behind HD in advances? How you make a leap like that is beyond me. You must be one of those guys that see the end of the chess game before it begins. Plus what does popping the seat have to do with your title. If they really want the bike, not being able to pop the seat isn't going to deter someone?

Basically the seat is a bitch to put on properly and it does pop off easily if you don't line it up properly. But really I think that if all you have to complain about is a popped seat on the bike then I'd suggest you are spending too much time on the net, positing whether BMW is better than HD or whoever, and not enough on the bike. Go ride it and try and find something significant to complain about.

Disclamer: Yes this post was made tongue in cheek and with a lot of humor. But there is truth in what I say.

Whilst the seat is not perfect it's not worse than many other bikes. Many could be wrenched off.

Of course Harley's are much better, unless you want to GO, STOP and LEAN.

Nothing against Harleys it's just I know what I prefer!

For those of you that are obviously very protective of the new GS I offer the fact that the seat on my €99 pushbike sold by Decathlon and the seat on my Kubota lawn mower appear more solid and robust than that on my GS. I offer you this comparative information so that you may vehemently defend the GS and condemn the named brands.:jester

My son is four years old! Wrenched-off? Weightlifter? Surely thats for shirtlifters?:ymca

The seat is made of flimsy lightweight plastic! My point is that the seat is a shit seat for a, mostly, great bike. Why couldn't BMUU provide an engineering solution for this component, highly visible and frequently used/seen as it is, that is objectively and subjectively better?

Only my opinions and experiences, so if you don't like it get a Kubota. They start, stop, go, cut, collect, etc.

Blah!

Blah!

Blah!

When I got home today, I got off the bike, and so did the pillion seat...

... but I'm not worried... I've ridden plenty of bikes in the recent years... and everything from my personal R6, GSX-R1000 etc etc etc, have come off...

.. The only thing that worries me is that I'll probably lose a pillion seat one day, just because the mechanism doesn't latch properly, and I don't push it down properly...

.. I.e it's not a BMW problem... :P :P :P

I don't protect it, I just ride it, that's what it is nade for.
OK you have a point, it's not of the old BMW solidity but then it's light and fun to ride which is more than you can say for many of the overweight, underpowered albeit more robust machines.

So the whole seat assembly is acceptable and those of us that own or ride a 1200 GS have to keep quiet and accept things as they are?

Why not?

Why did you not accept the standard screen assembly? Is that your "caring" side for the 1200GS?

Bonjour.

Bonjour.

Huomenta,

Hadn't thought of it... but I have now.. And I came to the conclusion that the screen bothers me when I'm riding the bike. The pillion seat locking mechanism will bother me when I discover that I've lost the pillion seat (which necessarily isn't a Bad Thing ;)).
The screen I can affect by modifying it.
The seat I can affect by making sure it's stuck on properly.

Screen is difficult to get perfectly right. Seat only requires a bit of thinking and a good push down.

?????????

If you where refering to Harleys being slower, heavier, and don't handle, mmmmmmmmm Heavy yes, don't handle depends how you ride and both my Harleys are faster than my GS1150. according to my GPS and speedo's.

Have you got 2 V-Rods..!!

AndyT;)

Fatboy and V-Rod.

1550 stage 3 Fatboy and a V-Rod.

Both plenty fast enough, and built to last.

:beerjug:

(apart from the indicators on the fatboy see post Indicators)

Richard.
