How to chain up a GS?

I doubt an immobiliser actually helps much, if you're going to throw things in the back of a van. I wouldn't expect many stolen bikes are actually ridden away. I had an immobiliser on mine when I bought it, the only time it immobilised the bike was one morning when I was leaving for work and the system failed, leaving me unable to start the bike. Cost me a taxi to and from work and a nice man to come and take the damned thing off.

I would much prefer to rely on a decent lock than an immobiliser, even if all it does it stop the opportunist thief, if the professionals want your bike enough, they'll find a way to get it.

I have a acumen pager alarm fitted. Low current draw and will not imobilize your bike should it go wrong (its been fine for 10 years). 500 meter range and gives me the choice of using an old fork leg I keep handy on the offenders, of if they are a little large calling plod :D .I use this with at least a disc lock as well.

I would like one of these U-Lock pager alarms but alas no UK suppliers:

Abus Granite lock and chain through the back wheel and swingarm ... NEVER leave the actual lock on the ground as a club hammer will make short work of it against the hard surface.:thumb

Just steering lock and disc lock for me. I might be being naive but I can't imagine many people are capable of actually lifting a GS.

Don't think living on a farm in the middle of nowhere helps much either.. Unless it's a pikey free zone. I have lost a trailer all the contents of my workshop and a tankful of diesel on various occasions. Inspire of locks chains and dog that thinks twice about letting me in. Insurance is the the answer

They stick a mcdonalds tray under the front wheel and slid it away they can be very imaginative thieving scum

I use a 2m (actually comes at 1.9m-just measured it) length of Almax chain with a squire SS65C closed shackle solid steel padlock. It fits between the centre stand and around the front wheel but still will lay on the ground. However, after watching the Almax video showing how futile an angle grinder was against it I don't worry too much. Hope this helps.

Is that a series III or IV, and just out of interest what does it weigh?

What I meant to say was is it light enough to carry around with you and on holiday abroad for example, or does it stay in the garage for use with a ground anchor? Thanks

It stays in the garage although I have used it when parking in London but it's very heavy. That's the price for piece of mind.

Just as I expected :-(. But between the alarm and the noise of the grinder I can only hope it was enough to get my attention!

My 18v Dewalt disc cutter is really quiet, a revving van will drown out the noise easily, the slim blades are really quick too. (hasten to add thats not what I use it for):D

Well it's a worrisome business locking up the pride and joy! I invested in a 2.5m 19mm pragmasis chain with a mamma padlock. It all weighs a ton. Combined with all the other measures it's not an easy target. At least that's the aim!

Go for the Almax chain & Squire padlock.A ballbearing fell out of my SS65C padlock,it's almost 10 years old.Squire took it back & refurbed it FOC.They are guaranteed for 10 years

What diameter is the rear wheel hub hole? Would an Almax IV chain fit through it?

Numpty moment yesterday. Went for a short spin and thought I would be going out again so never chained it. Then forgot to chain mine to the railing last night for first time and came to find this morning that my steering lock has been forced and broken. Cant get key to turn ignition barrel either now! Glad my neighbour opened his window and the 4 lads ran off. will re read this thread for another lock...

Presumably you mean for 1200? Pragmasis make a special pin to go through that hole and chain to

If you buy Almax tell them you want the 'RIDE' discount and they knock £10 off and do free postage.

He can be a grumpy old git so good luck with the call.
