How to check your Final drive bearing - 1100/1150

Well bugger me gently! I have also joined the fd gone group :( currently stuck in Switzerland.made the mistake of trying to get the bike to the local BMW dealer after they said their workshop could look at it Tuesday (they don't work Monday ) rang them today to be told they are busy and can't look at it this week :nenau was supposed to be heading home today :( waiting on carol Nash to decide what they will do. Spoke to steptoe and he was the first positive person :JB now just need to know whether to get the bits overnights

Ok latest news is 600-800 chf to do the repair with 5 hrs labour quoted :eek and they are still saying not until next week!

Do it yourself following Steptoe's on-the-road how to.

Them give the dealer the finger as you ride past on your way home. :upyou

Got the aa bringing the bike back to the hotel, hoping to get the bits overnighted by motoworks just hoping nothing else is in need of replacement in there

So the twats in Switzerland won't squeeze you in as an on the road touring emergency ? Bastards!!
I'd have a word with BMW or post something shit about them.

nope no help at all, they all say they are too busy and they can't even tell me how long to get spares! Just waiting for Motorworks to get a expedited delivery cost so I can get them to send the bits,I'm okay until Friday after which the hotel sounds like it is full:confused: one could thing has been the hotel they have tried their best.

The saga unfolds...... Got the bike back this morning, 40mins later the drive is in bits and all cleaned off (the hotel owners have a parts washer!) all going spiffingly until I got a call from Motorworks to say that the next day service from DHL is actually a 2 day service! So more sitting around!

The only good thing to come out of this is the reaction of the Hotel Oberland Lauterbrunnen the staff and owners of which have gone way above and beyond the call of duty,I can't recommend the place highly enough.

I'm sure they'll let you use the hotel oven to heat up the bearing and the final drive cover plate. :D

Funny thing is, the mongo sized burner they used to heat the bearing to remove it has been used as an emergency cooker when the power went out :aidan thanks for the help over the phone by the way:beerjug:

i've been wondering how that is possible

I tried this levering malarkey on Monday.

I got nowhere

After trying to get several different sizes of screwdriver between the outer edge of the seal and the cover plate, I gave up - I started to actually tear little pieces of the seal rubber away so I stopped. I was worried that I'd start to damage the cover plate in addition to the seal.

It's been in place for 19 years and seems to be properly stuck so I'll have to go on my trip with my big bearing unchecked. I'll be travelling with a big bearing and seal and hoping for the best :D

i would (did) lever the inside of the seal using the crown wheel boss where the wheel bolt on for a fulcrum. it's nice and hard and won't get damaged by the tool as perhaps a soft ali fork slider would. very easy to get the seal out this way.

something like this is made for the job, but a screwdriver will do it:

of course, once you stick the lever in past the seal lip, the seal is bolloxed. hence my interest in how steptoe does it.

maybe using one of those corkscrew seal pullers? i think some devious tool may be deployed to get it out intact.

to get the seal out by prising from the outside edge, while possible, would involve a lot of work, the total destruction of the seal and possibly the cover plate.

My thoughts also.

I'm certain I could get the seal out from the lip side, levering as you say above but this would certainly trash the seal (at least it would if I did it :D ).

it is standard practise to replace any seal that is removed, even if it looks fine.

they are much harder to get back in properly if you're doing it without removing the cover plate. the crown wheel sticking through and the size of the seal make it very easy to get it in crooked unless you have the proper installation tool DAMHIK :blast

Take a hammer, cold chisel or two, jetboil or similar and make sure you have a 7mm Allen wrench :thumby:

I would love to know the correct order to reassemble the seal

IIRC the RepRom shows the seal going in after the cover is fitted, but there is a specially machined to size tool to drift it in.

as to getting the seal out without damaging it - i'd take the cover plate off and press it out with my fingers. or just examine the bearing and screw it back together.

Ok a quick update, and the parts arrived Friday afternoon, 40mins later they were in and I was packing . 700 miles later I'm home and the only problem I have had is a slight misting of oil, which I suspect is from the oring that seals the abs sensor ,at some point the sensor must have been clouted by the abs ring and had a sharp edges that pared a slice off the oring, no biggie I will order a replacement as I need to replace the rear brake pads as they are worn and just a eencie weencie bit soaked in oil :D happy days :beerjug:

If you take the rivet out of a folding pack of feeler gauges, you get a wonderful set of blunt ended levers raging from the thinnest (which is too thin and flexible but can be used to start a small gap) up to much thicker (too thick in fact)

:thumb2

Small consolation....... But it's always good to learn from the experience of others so I've ordered a FD bearing and seal , 40 quid for the bearing and 18 for the seal as I recall from BMW .
Got a spare alternator belt :D
