Right, this may sound really silly but I'm picking up my 1200GS later today and I need a new tyre, I've seen all the threads on "how to" fit tyres, Break beads and what have you , but can't seem to find the silly question, how do you remove the back wheel, I've never had a shaft drive before. Will any bike shop be able to do it ?

thanks & Hello to you all :beerjug:

If your doing it yourself, place the bike on the side stand, loosen the 5 bolts on the wheel just enough then place back on the centre stand. Remove the bolts and pull the wheel off.
To refit just reverse procedure and torque bolts to 60Nm

Check the manual..!!

It`s a really simple job and is less hassle than with a chain drive.

Any idiot can do it (I know coz I am one:D ) but make sure you torque the bolts up correctly when you refit. It`s 60nm.

Thanks guy's, Just got in from the garage, been fiddling with it all evening.

BTW , I used wonder wheels , wheel cleaner on the brown header pipes and they have come up like new.

Trouble is the headers will soon discolour again with use.... I wouldn't worry about it :thumb2

By the way.. you'll need to remove the two caliper bolts on the rear brake, and lift the caliper clear to remove the rear wheel (or have you worked that one out already)

And once you've learned to get yer back wheel off you can start doing stuff like changing the various fluids (engine oil, gearbox oil, final drive oil) and basic servicing. It's a feck sight cheaper than using a dealer and there's a lot of satisfaction to be had in doing it. :Motomartin

Such a simple question, looks like this could run and run ....

? Not on a 1200GS, surely? :hide

BTW, hello and wlecome to you ...

When the dust settles, the links posted by Dronning and Slowdown couldn't make it look easier.

Are you sure Bryn? For the rear? :nenau

I've just RTFM to check I'm not missing anything and it says:

  • Placing the motorcycle on the centre stand
  • Engage first gear
  • Remove studs from the rear wheel, holding the wheel as you do so
  • Roll the rear wheel out toward the rear

In full and final answer to your question. - Will any bike shop be able to do it ?

Yes - don't worry

Remove bolts and then remove wheel no need to remove caliper bolts as both the caliper and rotor are bolted to the rear drive. Even though the caliper is loose in this pic you can see it dosen't need to be removed.
