How to remove maps from Zumo 550?

OK, this one's got me stumped. I've got the Topo maps for the UK and Spain on CD as well as the European City Navigator (which came on the unit).

I've already loaded some of the UK Topo maps and they're very good, but take up rather a lot of space. I'm off to Spain later this year, and I know there won't be enough room on the Zumo for me to add the Spain Topo map unless I remove the UK Topo map, but I just can't find a way of doing it.

The manual's no use and I've Googled til my fingers bled, anyone got any suggestions?

If I remember rightly, if you connect it to your computer, then click on My Computer, you'll see it listed under Devices, you can then open it up and see what is in the Folders, but always back it up before you do anything.

Hi Ken,

I did that once already and removed all of the Topo maps, but can't imagine that this is the Garmin recommended way of doing it. Surely there must be a more elegant way?

If you want to remove supplemental maps that you have installed:
delete the file gmapsupp.img in the \garmin folder.

Be careful not to remove the gmapprom.img file, as those are the built-in European maps.

If loaded into supplemental mapping space (using send to device in Mapsource or using MapInstall) then loading the Spanish Topo mapping will overwrite any mapping other than the primary mapping (City Nav Europe).

Just to clarify, the main mapping pre-loaded onto a Garmin GPS or put there by an update of the same will be in one file called 'gmapprom.img', this is fairly securely locked away by the system (unless you enter mass storage mode). Any additional mapping you load using the Mapsource or MapInstall applications will be loaded into the supplemental mapping file 'gmapsupp.img'. Using either of these applications will overwrite what was on there before replacing the 'gmapsupp.img' file entirely.

The 'gmapprom.img' is usually only messed with by and update DVD or online update. There are command line means of replacing it but that's not for the faint hearted.
