I'm planing a trip to norway where it at times can rain a lot. Hope I dont have to run in to much rain, but with that in mind, just how waterproof are the 1200 gsa adventure alu panniers?

I think it may very a bit, with some early ones letting in a few drops, but they replaced the seal in 2007 which helped a lot.

Mine are not only waterproof - but airtight too! A trip last year coming down from the peaks at Andorra into Spain, several thousand feet below had me needing to prise them open because of the lower air pressure inside the boxes.

That said, it never hurts to wrap things in bags, even just plastic shopping bags, to keep things dry when your opening the boxes outside and just in case.

mine are airtight AND they leak

new seals too. made FA difference.

They should be waterproof. Heres the text of a post of mine yesterday in another thread.

The alloy luggage for the 12GSA is marketed as being waterproof by BMW, and says so in the small print. I've had 3 complete sets (panniers & top box) under warranty to get a set that were waterproof, and this 3rd set is perfect and have had them for nearly a year now. No issues with warranty claims for letting water in either, (once I showed the dealer where it said they were waterproof).

Heres the blurb that says they are waterproof:

"These robust, all-new panniers with plain aluminium surfaces have
a capacity of 44 litres on the right-hand side and 38 litres on the left.
Waterproof and securely lockable, they can carry up to 10 kilograms of
luggage, and feature stainless steel lashing eyelets, so that extra items
can easily be attached to the outside. The top box offers an additional
32 litres (5 kilograms) of carrying capacity."

Click here and then select P24 of the BMW accessory catalogue

Also, P32 for the "waterpoof" top box...

As there are various waterproofing ratings (IPx3, 4, 7 etc), IMHO, BMW are being rather naieve by claiming that a product is waterproof without specifying to what degree....

So you haven't had a set long enough for them to oxidize yet ?

Ding Ding Round 2 :D :augie

got mine last year brand new, first trip to scotland pissed all of the second day right hand one did let in a little but other side ok,had all my kit in holdalls so no major drama's.

Yes, you're correct :thumb

The GSA liners are excellent and keep your kit dry.

Ah, you say, you must buy liners for your panniers ?? Handy for pulling out of your pannier and carrying to your room/tent as well as keeping your gear dry.

Attaching stuff to the lids of the panniers leads to about a cupful of water working it's way in, in heavy weather. Not really that much of a drama until your take out shares in Autosol ;)

Leak like a sieve, or at least mine do, collecting a shallow puddle of water in the bottom.

And the topbox often becomes glued shut above a thousand meters, due to differential air pressure.

Waterproof inners (bin bags will do) and a good kick, solve the problem.

mine were air tight but always had water in the bottom i use the inner bags so it did not affect me to much

Ok after reading your posts I guess it would be a good idea to get the bmw waterproof inner bags instead of the cheaper inner bags from www.maneevent.org.uk that does not seem to be waterproof.

The BMW liners are worth it - tough, well made, and totally waterproof :thumb

My panniers have never leaked...although I've never tied anything one the top which I guess could have an effect.

As has been said on some occasions they are air-tight and the lids are difficult to remove...but they have never leaked.

I do however get some condensation in the nearside one occassionaly....but this I take to be from the heat from the exhaust not a leak...this has happened when there has been no rain so I'm pretty sure this is correct.

I would also recommend the BMW inner bags....they work, are practical, and are really not that expensive concidering they do the job very well, so to me offer good value for money :thumb2...I've never used the top-box inner bag though, as I find it's easier to pack, and can get more in, without it.
