Anyone had any problems with thier HP2 flattening it's battery. I seem to remember when BlueSweeper pick his up that the tech said that they "can" do that but in just over three weeks of sitting in the garage mine refused to turn over. It's now busy eating volts and hopefully will jump into life this evening.

Now before you all flame me :spitfire for not riding my nice new bike for three weeks - believe me if I could have got out on it I would!!!! :(

Anyway, for those of you lucky enough to have an HP2 :D and to all those who will get one :beerjug: , You Have Been Warned ;-)

In general the boxer engine and mechanics inside do take A LOT to get them going, even a ever so slight than less full battery with cause failure to start.

I have had numerous problems with my bikes in the past which have all now dissappeared since buying a Battery Tender. I have the fancy BMW socket one as it is just too easy to use, plus in and always come out to the bike ready to go.

This has become a lifesaver in Boston as the bike has not left its home for over 4 weeks now due to snow, ice and minus temps for a month. Now this weekend being a balmy 2 degrees should see some action on the roadways.

Buy a charger or be continuously frustrated.

get a decent battery and make sure it's charging, don't use an alarm, no optimate, no problem ;)

may not apply to 1200s with dodgy computerised self discharging systems :D

So is it safe to use an optimate with the battery connected to the bike? it sounds as if the charging process is automatic so you can't decide if it will charge or trickle charge - is that right?

General opinion is that it's safe to use an Optimate on an R1200GS while the battery is connected. The risk is that if the charger goes into desulphate mode the high voltage could damage the bike's electronics, but Optimate claim this is impossible with the battery connected to the bike.

So if the HP2 uses the same electronics (highly likely I would think) that you're OK.
