Hi Chaps

Having done the Level 1 BMW course and few little off-road jaunts, I was thinking about having a go at the HP2 experience - partly as I thought it would be a giggle, partly because I am v tempted by an HP2 (even though I only have a 31" inseam, have little experience, would like to take a passenger occasionally, and occasionally have a 250 mile commute for work... but this bike doesn't seem to be about being rational!) and this seems as good a way as any to try the bike.

My question is: Do I need to be an experienced rider to have a go at the HP2 Experience day? I rode the regular 12 for the level 1 course and seemed to do okay and I'm reasonably fit. If any of you who've been on course can shed some light, that would be great! :thumb2

Cheers

Mav

HP2 day brilliant fun and I laughed loads, some of the roads OMFG almost hit a sheep, went the wrong way, got lost drove up farm yard. Then the off road bit hahahahahahah and crash... cuppa tea and rolling burnouts to finish off. perfeckt! so good in fact I bought one

PS go careful on it cos it will bite you, I looked down and found myself doing a very careful stack of mph and the corner was very sharp! left 2 skidmarks....

OK - so you guys have confirmed that it does sound like an awesome day :thumb2

Should I be concerned being a noobie??

PS: will take change of underwear :P

Just go do it. The HP2 is a pussy cat off-road compared to the 12 unless your right hand tells it otherwise :thumb2 Seriously, it can be husttled around like a much smaller bike once you have a few miles under your belt.

When I did the course the bikes had a mixture of tyres on them; if you can get in there first and get one that does not have the standard factory fit rubber on it. The one I rode had Michelin Deserts on it; transforms the grip on the technical stuff.

Hopefully they still do the section with the road wheels on as well (you get to change them yourself just before lunch) which is a real hoot as well. They take you on some grat roads and don't expect you to ride girl:eek:

I also found Si Pavey a great judge of skill and he will do his best to stretch your skills and set a good pace without breaking you.

Enjoy....

Jarv

P.S. if you want an HP2 I might be letting mine go soon. 18 months old, >3k miles, both sets of wheels, personal plate "HP02BAD"

you'll just love it the only thing that will kill or vaguely hurt you is how much throttle you give it... had mine on whatever tyres and it stuck like shit to a blancket but the front forks went all over the shop under heavy braking... so nothing too crazy... just get amongst it for the money a very good day out...

Thanks for the advice Jarv - cool plate on your HP2  If the day goes well I'll give you a call, probably won't be for a month or so... Do you have a price in mind?

Thanks loiq - I'm not an aggressive rider so I should be able to be sensible on the throttle :augie

I'll let you know how I get on

Cheers chaps :beerjug:

Went on the Experience at the weekend

Had a relatively last minute chance to get on the HP2 experience this weekend and was supposed to be going with JimboGSA - he bruised his ribs on doing the level 2 so had to drop out (big girl! :P ) Paul (wildbeeste) took his place. There were only two other guys attending - an older, and very experienced, chap from Stratford and Niki from Touratech Austria. Si Pavey was leading the day with Scott who is normally a mechanic for BMW Off-road Skills... turns out he's rather handy riding as well!

Here are the bikes on the road wheels, ready for the morning road ride - NB: brand new tyres, had not been used at all! we took it a little steady for the first couple miles.

The road ride was great! Really easy to ride the bikes, great feel from the front brakes and coming from the Dakar the dive was not a problem. Seemingly endless torque allowing you to be very lazy with the gear change.

After a little playing over the Brecon Beacons, we headed to the Enduro Park to change the wheels - things have moved on now and they do it for you :augie

Had a little lunch and got ready for a play in the park. Here's me looking a little scared and aprehensive:

The off-road ride was incredible! Scott and Si were great guides. For a while, Si had to leave us (one of the level 1 guys had broken his elbow  ) So Scott led us (with his girlfriend on the back!!) around the park and still managed the odd tailslide!

Si then took us around some more - a bit more pace, some good decents and ascents and some water. The bike seemed to make it all remarkably easy! We then joined up with the rest of the group to head back to the base... but Si and Scott were still up for some playing... for those still wanted to. Paul and the other chap went back leaving me with Niki and the instructors. Niki races trail bikes back in Austria so I was suddenly feeling out my depth  But they were great with me. We played in a ditch learning to carve turns at the top of the sides and then they took us to this ridiculous climb through the trees. You knew it was bad as even Si Pavey had to paddle to get up!

Here is Scott getting up the track:

All in all a great day!! Found the bike to be far less intimidating than I thought it would be. All the power and balance of a 12 a bike that feels like it weighs less than my Dakar! So, either there is enough room for the girlfriend on the back or I have to find enough money to keep the dakar and buy the HP2. Anybody had any experience riding more than a couple miles with a pillion?

PS: Thanks for the encouragement to do the day! Although you guys should feel responsible for debt I'm about to get myself in to!!

Some video as well

Managed to get on of my videos posted online as well. Here is Scott showing us how to get up this last bit of single track that we did - even after several attempts, neither he or Si Pavey could get up with out putting a foot down... wasn't exactly confidence inspiring for me!
