HPI - check before you buy.

Guys
Just a quick point about buying these cheap checks.
The data held by some companies is nowhere near as comprehensive and the actual genuine HPi checks. I work for Hpi and although the cost for checks is higher, how many other of these companies to you know that will guarantee the data?.. for thousands of pounds.

I look after Operations at the main data centre and fairly regularly run checks... the real Hpi stuff is far more comprehensive. More expensive than some, but reliable.

this gets even worse
last i understood these companies are under no obligation to inform anyone that a loan has been taken out against a V5 registration document
having said that i have no idea how you can find out

I've had good results from these checks, picked up Nickodemus's bike as a CAT C and saved another tosser a heap of bother with that twat. Also picked up loads of SmartCar issues as loads get written off as parts are so expensive.

Lastly I got my 2003 Jumbo Transit for £1000 as it was a CAT D and the dealer did not know. :thumb2

They might not be as tough as an expensive Hpi check but for casual looking on eBay etc VERY good value, by all means do a full HPi when your there and handing over the dosh, I just used it to spend £3 to save a whole day and £50 in fuel traveling to find a write off. :blast

Buyer beware!:rob

Always worth doing the HPI.

My present car showed as having finance and nearly spoiled the deal. But a few calls to the named finance company showed that the records had just not been updated and i had the finace tag removed and all was ok.

Working in the auto-trade I can confirm this is quite a common thing. It's supposed to be fully automated system but a lot of finance companies manually update their records when an agreement is settled; and it gets missed or inputted in error.

Always, always check it up though if something shows on the HPI, and make sure you get written confirmation from any finance company that they have amended their records and no longer have any interest in the vehicle concerned.

Always get HPI done. I went to trade in my Vauxhall Zafira which I had from new and which had the outstanding finance cleared when the car was just four months old but the HPI check showed an outstanding finance flag on it.
After many phone calls trying to get the flag removed and with no success ( and losing the deal on the car I wanted to change to)i eventually returned to the original dealer from whom I had purchased the Zafira. I discovered that the vehicle identification number was assigned to a different registration mark that went with a Vauxhall Astra that had been sold new on the same day as mine and where the two registration marks were consecutive. More to the point, the Astra had previously been traded in at the same dealership who had not picked up the error.
It just goes to show that systems are not foolproof!

Well, it could be my F800GS the OP is referring to, it's (now) about that price.

However, on my ad I've stated that there IS finance outstanding, and that I will settle it in advance of sale, in the event there's a likelihood of it being sold, so maybe not...

(edit) - Oops - seems he's already spoken to the seller. It's not me, then... :blast

Wow, those logbook loans sure are a bit steep with their interest rates at APR 537.9%:eek:

Used them for a few years.

Reg check is free IE put in reg number & it should bring up vehicle your interested in, if it doesn't then you know something is wrong.

Then upgrade to the classic check for various other checks..
Then upgrade to Gold if you are set on buying vehicle...
