I'm thinking about getting a hugger for my 1200GSA LC - just to help cut down the amount of crap it throws up

Question is, does anyone know if you can fit a hugger with a mudsling already in place?

If so, what is the collective opinion on the better hugger to go for? I'm drawn to the Puig as they seem to make pretty good stuff otherwise

I’ve fitted an Ilimberger hugger and a mudsling. I had to trim the left most edge of the mudsling to cater for the support arm of the hugger. It all looks good and as though the parts belong on the bike. The combination prevents splatter on the underside of the rear mudguard and protects the shock absorber but doesn’t prevent the spray of road dirt all over the back end of the bike. I have removed the OE shovel mudguard as I think they look unsightly and don’t seem to me to make much difference to keeping the bike clean. I don’t know if it’s a product of the spoked wheels or being a GSA: I’ve owned several GSes and this 2017 bike is the worst for spray.

A Puig hugger will fit with a Mudsling. The clearance is very close, and they may touch when the rear goes light, but mine show no signs of damage. Are they effective in stopping crap that gets thrown up? Not on my GS or GSA. Mine is now removed and sat in the garage collecting dust.

Noticed some that are advertised on EBay recently, which are identical and a fraction of the price. My only reservation with those, would be the quality of the fixings. One holds the brake calliper and the other holds the final drive support bracket.

I sometimes wonder if the Mudsling is actually making things worse. I know it stops crap getting to the shock, but suspect it has a negative effect on clean air flow around the rear end.

I have a mudsling and puig on my 1250gs and trimmed a bit off both at the left side and they work fine.

I have both on mine. Whilst they are 'snug' neither required any adaptation to fit.

Don't bother with the hugger, it was the first thing I fitted, it doesn't do much.
I have fitted it with a mudsling and Puig infill panels. The infill panels keep you clean and the mudsling keeps the shock clean.
Buy a cheap chinese mudsling as you will need to cut it about a bit, the mudsling and infill panels use some of the same mounting points.
A Stanley knife and some self tappers sorted it all out. Been in place for 30,000mls on two GSs now.

Cheers all. I already have the Mudsling and the infill panels (though not the Puig ones) but did wonder what - if anything - the hugger added to the mix. It would seem that it's not really worth it - and I guess, if I go to the chunkier tyres that I had on my last bike (Scorpion STR's) the hugger might have to come off anyway

FWIW, I fitted a plate on the centre stand (initially an old biscuit tin lid, but it did have a classic Bonneville on it, latterly one of Mr. Hooton's stainless jobs) and reckon it cuts a lot of crap being thrown around. I sold my unused Puig hugger to Billy Buell. :D

It's easy to test the centre stand plate idea. Find/cut something to fit and cable tie it on. If it works, invest in something you don't mind showing off.

I didn't realise you were 1250-mounted when we "transacted" back at the new year.

? I'm not. 1200LC GSA.

re the centre stand plate... I had a Rugged Roads one on the previous LC but had to remove it when I fitted the Akra headers

But I've just bought the plastic centre stand plate that is fitted to the 1250GSA (no, I still don't have a 1250 - just "a bit of one") from the dealer for £35.10

Ye. Just a small alteration and fits a treat. May be doesn't do alot but helps a little and means less washing which is all good. Don't mind the look either.

Has anyone transferred a hugger from an early 1200 GS LC to a 1250?

Both Ilmberger and Puig list different part numbers for the 2018 GS onwards (both 1200 and 1250), so I guess the bevel gear housing is slightly different?

Transferred an Ilmberger hugger originally purchased for a 2013 1200GS LC to a 2019 1250 with no problem. Mountings all lined up OK. Did not think it would fit after seeing different part numbers.

That’s good to know. I have an Ilmberger from my 2014 GS LC which I want to fit to my new 1250

I eventually went for a Puig hugger. I had to trim down a couple of inches from the front of the hugger and chamfer the corners to have it clear the mudsling but it does its job effectively and I'm happy.
