I'm just back from a weekend in Hungary and saw miles of wonderful gravel roads just made for GS'ing ! sadly I wasn't on my bike but it was great to see trails and really good hard packed gravel roads going off in all directions. I was staying in the village of Herdervar about 90km south East of Vienna. This is close to the Slovak border and the whole area was a maze of trails and good roads to play on. We borrowed a couple of pedal bikes and cycled along the Danube for miles on a trail the any GSer would love and we hardly saw a soul let alone any signs or notices banning you from the area. No ramblers or anoraks waving walking sticks - truely GS heaven :bow
My impressions are very positive , not just for biking . Lots of nice little hotels, cheap good resaurants (lunch for 2 with a bottle of wine about £20) , ample excellent wine and beer and hospitable people. This is a place worth visiting if you get the chance. :clap

You were probably too far east to see the dam at Gabcikovo. I've not seen it yet.

When I lived in Brno the papers and Austrian English-language radio was always discussing it as it was expected to do vast environmental damage to the Hungarian side of the river.
