Hi all.
Bought my 850GS a week ago, and I seem to have what i can only describe as a bike that will not sit around 30mph without hunting/surging, it just will not run smooth at this speed, bloody annoying, as it is xlnt in every other way. I love the bike but don't want to have to live with this problem if it's fixable. Any advice on what it could be? is it something that I should/could get repaired/replaced under warranty.
All help / views gratefully received.

They all do that sir But easily fixable. :)

Get the throttle bodies balanced and a new set of sparkplugs.
Wouldnt hurt to make sure the valve clearances are correct.

Basicly the hunting/surge your getting is because theres an in balance between the two cylinders.

Important...

To adjust your valves first. I had a bit of trouble tuning mine ( an 1100) till I did the Valve Adjustment. Buy a workshop manual. Easy to work on. Don't despair they are a great bike. BIGJim Tasmania.

Thank you

Thank you all, That gives me something to be getting on with. And yes i did read the valve adjustment paper!!! Let you all know how it goes.

Thanks again

Hi there,
I am looking @ a 2000 W plate 850 GS with 49K on the clock how old is yours, how many miles... any other problems?

I got a carb balancing gizmo of Ebay a couple of years ago when I got my 1150 GS, basicly all it is is a long length of clear pipe with a couple of coils in the center inside which is a ball bearing.
Hang it on a convinient place on the bike connect each end of the pipe to the air nipple and start the engine, the ball bearing will move over to the side that is "sucking" more as easy as that, just tweak one of the screws to bring the ball bearing back to the center thats the carbs balanced @ idle. you can now move on through the range, I used to do it @ 2000rpm & 4000 rpm as well, for this you need to loosen the throttle body actuating cable on the side you wish to adjust.... Not very well explained, There is a really good write up on both tappet adjustment & carb balancing on: http://www.advrider.com/forums/search.php?searchid=2776894

Hiya, What year is your bike because I have a '99 r version and it has fuel injection not carbs?? i also had a problem with the bike surging at 30mph. Nearly drove me demented. Anyway, I tried everything and eventually went to my old mechanic who broke my fuel injector and put nearly a full bottle of redex into the tank. Anyway, the bike died and spent two weeks in the motorad shop before they eventually changed the Hall sensor.

I don't know if it was the fuel injector or the Hall sensor but she runs really smoothly now. Hope this helps.

Hi Baldrick. I've only had mine a week, but it's a W(2000) 33400 miles fsh v very clean, a credit to previous owner. rides really well, runs bloody great except for this silly surging at around thirty mph. Can I ask why you are looking at an 850GS after owning an 1150GS? I thought the GS to own was the 1150GS or GSADV.

Hi There, mine is a W (2000) only had it a week so not really had chance to look at it mechanically, it sound really well and I'm being careful not to void my warranty by having a shufty myself. Thanks for the post. L8r Dude.

After doing a valve clearance job cold I warm mine (2000 model1150) to show 5 bars (norm temp) on rid then balance first using brass air screws at 1100 rpm when tickover balanced ,open throttle up to 3000rpm then adjust right handside cable on throttle body. I use a carb tune 2 with no problems and bike runs great, remus pipe,y piece ,K&N filter and steptoe cat code mod(red wire blue spades a must )

I still recon that it was the Hall sensor. I hope it's not hall center...I'd look silly then:aidan

Anyways, I had a surging problem. Now I don't:thumb2

I tried all this spark plug, balancing and tappett stuff, none of it made any difference to the surging. I got rid of it by fitting a straight through exhaust, chipping the ECU and a K&N filter, no more surging now.:)

Cost my boy.. cost.. :rob

The 850 with luggage is 3.5K (the book trade in is more than I am paying, so if it isn't all it is cracked up to be then I can trade in for an ADV) An 1150 ADV with luggage = 7.1K

I wouldn't say my 1150 surges, but it is far from smooth when moving from a neutral to a closed or open throttle. The level of control I get from a set of ancient 40mm Dellortos is vastly superior. I think the source of the problem is the FI set up to run lean to meet emissions regs. I'm a good mechanic and have set the bike up in terms of TPS, injector balance, valve clearences etc and it still runs like a dog doing from closed to open throttle, no amount of throttle finessing will avoid the jerks!

Rubbish - still LOVE the bike though. Power Commander and shelling out £500 is the cure I reckon, unless someone knows different
