Hello and welcome to the world of GSing. I welcome you lot as newbie's and blame Ewan for taking the GS away from it's cult status and in to the mass market contrived pile of crap that it's become today. Who are you lot anyway? Where did you come from? What do you want?
I know what you want. I can tell from the posts on this forum that the most popular section is GS or not 2 GS. That's because you all love reinforcing the idea that the image you are cultivating with your new GS's and TT goodies are distractions for you that enable you NOT do deal with your mid-life crisis. You're the same people who read magazines that give things marks out of ten. I know this because you're also the same lot that move their lips when they read. You gather at bike haunts and strike up conversations with phrases like "Please with that bike then?" But the bike isn't enough. Oh no. It's only half of the package. Who'd own a GS without the obligatory GS friendly rags. The Hein Gericke Rallye suit or the origanlly named BMW rallye suit. How about an Arai Tour X helmet? Or maybe a Shoei Syncrotec for the more reserved amongst you. But instead of uniting with your chosen image you bitch. 50cc is better. Black ones are faster. Lighter is best. TT tankbags or you're not in the club. Hope you're starting to see a picture building here. Because that's all it is. A picture of your alter ego as you ride past the shops and checkout your reflection in the windows. Feels good eh? Sidi couriers to Aria Tour X. What it all about? Eh? Not the BIKE me thinks.

Some valid, if pointless, observations. Maybe the truth hurts sometimes?

However, this reads like a confession to me ....

.... and I don't know of ANY biker who doesn't check out his/her refection in windows, from Virago to 'Busa.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Can't be a regular in disguise, there's no ripping the piss out of GPS and mileage snobbery.................... :D :D :D

Well well well, a generous response indeed. Much of it largely predictable dribble but some interesting stuff as well. Judging by the time of the responses I feel I have to redress the balance of things. For many of you it's 25% bike, 25% cloths and a massive 50% FORUM. You know I'm talking about you because you have your mail alerts switched on in order that you don't miss so much as a punctuation mark on ukGSer. Your sitting there like a geek with a poisoned keyboard ready to attack. We saw a revolt in the back benches and the party is odviously fragmented between the 1200 and 1100 brigades. The 1150 riders must be busy riding their bikes as intended. This whole forum thing is the antithesus of what the GS is about. Freedom. Getting out there and enjoying. Maybe many of you are night time security gaurds or computer operators or just plain saddoswho sit watching the forum all day like some obcessive freak who uses forums to address the short fall in real social skills. But lets not go there. Another interesting thing is that within about 15 posts you automatically go into self destruction. Fighting and insulting each other like wild pack animals. Some of you are so insecure that you were responding to me in third person, suggesting that you only feel comfortable knowing that you've got other geeks on the same wave length. It's not all bad news guys and gals. There were some great balanced responses and you know who you are and you should push this spirit forward by setting up a more reasonable GS site and leave the anoraks in this black whole called ukGSer. For those who can read more than one sentence without losing concentration, congratulations.

I think Jamie has got it right, this is a 100% good thread, wind-up.
Anyway who cares what you ware or how you look,
The sun never sets on a "Cool Dude" and all that.

I just get on the bike and ride it. It is the best bike I have had out of about 10 over the last 30 years.
So I say to the Original GSer welcome to the club, it can't be that bad as YOU joined!
Barrie.

You see why I’m warming to you already…. ‘cept my 1150 is on blocks at the moment waiting for new tyres…… Mmm.. now what sort of tyres should I fit, Original? I mean, now I’ve read your post I am undecided… should I go with the pack and put Tourance on… or… for that well ‘ard street look and fit some of those knobbly things? Damn this indecision! Perhaps if I spend longer on this forum I may be enlightened… it sure is a trial this “instant life style” ain’t it? One teensy-weensy point, if I may? In your analysis for the reasoning behind purchasing, you forgot one, vital, reason. Take a good look at yer average Gser…… Ugly, ain’t we? Well what better disguise than riding something that makes even us look pretty? :)

Ps.... ‘bin riding GS’s and BM’s long before our actor brethren got involved… does that make me original too? Of course I wouldn’t ride a rattly old airhead anymore since they’re shite…… :dabone

Spelling and grammar a bit of a problem I see - If you need lessons I can put in touch with a good teacher, it should improve your communication skills :-))

Dear North - does that 'GS & sleeping with women half your age' work for you? I've tried the whole package - 1200 (red), Rallye II suit GS1 Boots, GS1 gloves, System 5 Helmet, BLOC shades, let my beard grow just enough to look as if I was in the desert yesterday, driven thru 2 muddy puddles and left the dirt on but when I pull up in the supermarket car park, loose the helmet and light up a Marlboro women cross the road to avoid me - where am I going wrong?

Puzzled of Letcombe.

Very cutting indeed OriginalGSer!! Just out of interest, and not as any sort of dig, as I don't want any of the e-vitriol aimed directly at me, thanks, but judging by membersname and content, I'd say you love the GS (I'm guessing you ride the original air-head and that its seem quite a few trips, well looked after but not daubed in polish) and what it stands for and you probably feel that we on this site are not worthy of the bike and its ethos as, in your eyes, we are missing the point of it all.

But back to your post: I think that those on this site, although some can be a bit edgey, are generally a nice bunch: I have many queries about my bike answered and many pointers given regarding my travel plans (Feel free to do a search on threads I have started) and the response has always been supportive with a dash of dry humour that I always like! Also the topics are pretty varied and its not all about "I braked so hard on my ride home from work that the ABS kicked in , snigger, snigger". (we even helped one of our more adventurous members get back on the road recently) I have found on this site, during my spate at home with a slipped disc (Hence, MY nerdy regularity on the forums) the mentality and attitude that I feel has been lost to biking in other areas: a sense of community and not each for himself that I keep seeing out there now days amongst those who have bought a bike to impress their mates and be in vogue for a year or so: I don't doubt that this lot will stop on the hard shoulder to see if help is needed (if that is the beginnings of slipper wearing and pipe smoking then bring it on). And as for freedom? Well none of us have real freedom do we, even if we think we do on that nice A road or RUDD as that little piece of freedom had a cost: the petrol in your tank and the tyreskeeping you sunny side up: for those you need money for which you need a job hence the noose of responsibility digs in a little tighter...But I'm happy with my bike and what I do with it, be it commute, travel or hoon around, back permitting because I just love riding, whatever bike it is. Personally, I think your email is a tad tongue in cheek and its all a bit of a wind-up; which really worked too.

As for me I'm going to lie back, put my back brace on, and look for my new thread alerts whilst thinking of cunning put downs whilst eating a can of cold baked beans... :thumb

It's amazin' the number of people that hide behind a nom de plume - don't want to make themselves unpopular or just to stir it up by posting under their 'usual' board name... :tosser

I think its just easier for blokes....but you never know... with patience and perseverance, you too could perfect a technique..... ? :D
